ENTIRE PLANETS GONE!?!?!?

oh come on, my current save had over 40 planets. after the update when i opened it all planets are uninhabited whats with this???.

When major updates to stellaris occur, old saves are invalidated. What you can do to fix it is right click stellaris, then go to the beta's section. Under this tab you'll find "rollbacks" this allows you to set the game back before a specific update. This will allow you to play old saves without issue.

Old saves are completely incompatible with the new update, you have to rollback to 3.14

Every big update that actually change the core game. There are update where they just add species and make little changes and those could probably still work.

It depends on the update.

Updates from X.X.2 to X.X.3 are most likely save game compatible. Updates like X.4.1 to X.5.0 most likely not full save game compatible, based on what are changed. Big Major updates like 3.14.4 to 4.0.0 are most likely NOT save game compatible.

It's not that simple.
1.9 to 2.0 wasn't compatible
2.1 to 2.2 wasn't compatible
2.whatever to 3.0 was compatible
Several of the 3.X to 3.Y were compatible
3.14 to 4.0 isn't
It depends entirely on what exactly is changed, and the version difference doesn't always represent that properly.

For me the rollback to "!3.14.xyz rollback" did not help, maybe because I opened the saved game with 4.0.3.

In 4.0.3 all planets were uninhabited, but in 3.14 also whole territory was gone.

Go back another save.

There are literally multiple warnings about old saves when you launch game....

If the save was overwritten in 4.0 then yeah, it won't work.

Apparently no warnings appear if you click the Resume button in the launcher to load that save.
