They also have access to traits that still do things that no other race can be by default, which open up quite a few strategies that are not otherwise possible - albeit mostly cheesy strategies.
Plus, they may even have unique interactions with the new Infernal planet type. And no, we don't need a new planet type for every single species, that's just silly. Let it be the thing unique to Infernals.
Overall, they're perhaps a bit generic, but they do have a cohesive theme and a unique place in the game. This constant battle for "coolness creep" really needs to stop.
They have updated the old species packs and added stuff for free, more then once to the same packs even. That said, they haven't updated them to "infernals" level, but they were never at "infernals" price point either so that is likely unreasonable to expect.
Species packs used to be very barebones. I'l use the "Humanoids" species pack as my example, it had the following at its release:
- A bunch of Portraits.
- 1 Ship set.
- 1 City set.
- 1 Premade empire (Voor Technocracy).
- 3 new advisor voices.
- 3 new music tracks.
And that was all. No civics, no origins, no traits.
For humanoids they have (over time) added the following for free (might very well have missed something, they haven't even updated the Steam storepage with all the additions and i can't find a complete list :P):
- Civic, Masterful Crafters.
- Civic, Pleasure Seekers.
- Civic, Pompous Purists.
- Trait, Existential Iteroparity.
- Trait, Jinxed.
- Trait, Psychological Infertility.
- Origin, Clone Army.
