Problem: Assigning a 'Head of Research' in 3.8.2
So I'll make this short. After the update, of course my Leadership Capacity was upside down (16/8) and I had to start figuring out how to get that under control.

One issue I can't seem to figure out is Technology. They list out what I'm researching, but no specific scientist is listed anymore, and there is this 'Head of Research' up top that is blank. So, I click on that to 'Go to Council to Assign Head of Research.' It takes me to the Council screen and all I see is my president. I see no option anywhere to add a Head of Research.

This seems broken to me, but I'm willing to believe it's me. Any suggestions?

You're running a 3.7 save on 3.8. 3.7 saves will not be compatible with 3.8. So you can either roll back (Right-click Stellaris, Properties, Betas tab and choose 3.7.4 from the dropdown), finish your save, then update to the new save, or start a new save now. :)

Thank you so much! This clears up a hell of a lot. Just to clarify though, are you saying I should R-Click on my Stellaris icon? When I do that I go to Properties, but I have no 'Beta' tab. I do see a 'Previous Version' but don't see anything listed under that.

Go to steam librarby, right click stellaris in the list on the left. Select options, then you select betas, and you can pick what version you want to use when you click on the nudge for the drop down list.

Version aside, hover over the "Head of Research" at various spots. Tool tip will tell you what "class" is an option, for example scientist or admiral. Then below, there are sections/tabs for both current leaders and "recruitable leaders". This is not a "throw a dart" thing; depending on your situation and the traits each offers, somebody likely to be a better choice than just "picking anybody".

Another cool thing about the new 3.8 is you have to make tactical decisions re traits, and when traits are upgraded, do you groom this scientist or general or whatever for a future council position, OR, do you choose traits to improve their field job? It's your decision.

It took me a few minutes to figure out the mechanics but like I always do, I just hover and read tool tips and search the tabs and find the answers, instead of rushing to Steam and claim "such and such is broken" like so many do.

It's such a cool update. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. This is a HUGE improvement over the previous version.

Think it was quite nice change as well once figured out how it worked. Most annoying is events where leaders "retire" to go do something else, rathern than work until they die of old age. And elections that shift leaders around that sometimes not really beneficial. Make it a priority to unlock the two additional council slots. The agendas is cool as well, but I wish they would be active until we decide to enact another one though, and not just for 10 years at a time and then a cooldown before can be used again.
