ESSENTIAL dlc?
considering buying this on sale, which DLC would you consider essential, if any? I don't mind buying a few, but I don't want them all.

I'm going to say utopia, nemesis and maybe apocalypse. The story packs are all kind of pointless. Although if you play with mods like I do you might need other DLC for those.

I wouldn't say they're pointless since they add more flavor to the game. Same with the Species packs.

Utopia is definitely the most essential of all the DLC's though. If someone is going to buy DLC that would be the #1 priority.

If you provide an answer, thx!!
If you have something fxggoty to say instead, you'll get no response so dont bother.

The most "essential" DLC is Utopia. If you're going to buy just one, then that's the top pick.

From there it's just a matter of taste and what sounds interesting to you. Aside from Utopia I don't think a single other DLC is "essential" to the Stellaris experience. You don't really need any of the DLC to get a fully fledged experience but Utopia helps.

Galactic Paragons is probably #2 after Utopia, the leader rework just doesn't work well with the leftover vanilla mechanics.

These are my recommendations in order:

Utopia
Distant Stars Story Pack
Synthetic Dawn
Leviathans Story Pack

I have purchased no others and use many good mods to improve my games. I have over 4,200 hrs of game play time since 2016.

None, the game you like now, will be gone when Paradox desides to develop the game in a different direction.

So it is a waste to buy any dlc's.

Because in the end the game will be unrecognisable.
It will develop and transgress into different genres and you can end up with a game/genre you don't like.

And for a game with €300 worth of dlc's that is a lot of money for something you in the end resents to have bought as a buyer.

Ah hate bot spotted.

FYI you can play older version of the game by going into properties>Beta>Pick any old version you want to play.

Look at the reviews of the expansions and such. If they are mixed or poor then don't bother, right away at least. There are some really nice mods to try out before spending on any questionable ones.

I recommend utopia and galatic paragon first. Playthrough a few times, learn the game mechanism then buy on next sale depend on what you like about the game or what you think it is lacking

Unless you plan on sinking a lot of hours in or sticking to just a handful of DLC I'd suggest the subscription since it's the most cost effective if you only plan to play the game for a few months or so. If you really want to buy them piecemeal Utopia is a good recommendation and while I think Paragons is one of the lower quality DLC, it is as an above poster mentioned kind of necessary to make the leader mechanics not be garbage. The rest you should go by what sounds interesting to you.

Utopia, ancient relics, galactic paragons, and maybe apocalypse feel like safe bets for always being worth having. Any other dlc you just gotta do soul searching and wonder if any of the things they add actually mean anything to you. If you don't care about being a plant probably don't need the plantoid species pack y'know?

Utopia, perhaps Federations. Every time they update the game it will change the ranking of the DLC.

I would buy any DLC, story pack or species pack, once or twice a year, when they come below 10 coins. I'm more interested in extended events than in extended mechanics, and I have avoided major DLCs until now (Utopia, Apocalypse...), because they change the game even more. Also, I play modded, so I have access to some DLC content already (heavier ship classes or new planet classes for example).

In general, I'm not fond on how (otherwise valuable) additional content is added to base game. Random chances are too much altered: buy a necroid species pack and see a quarter of the galaxy becoming necroid; buy the Zroni DLC and have them more often than other precursors...

thanks to everyone who answered. Based on the replies here I purchased:

Starter pack (includes utiopia and synthetic dawn)
the leviathan story pack
and the galactic paragons dlc.

I'll give it a whirl with these. Appreciate the suggestions.
