Crashing when starting a new game
So I am getting a strange crash after the new update, I can play old saves just fine, loading in actually seems to be faster now for some reason, by up to 30 seconds which is strange but nice I guess. The problem is if I click new game, the game just crashes instantly before it even finishes loading the assets for the faction creation menu and spits out a crash log thats anywhere from 20-80 MB in size, I am really confused as the crash log is different each time but the input that causes the crash is always the same and yields the same result. I have test: unmodded, modded, and unmodded with no DLC and it doesn't seem to make a difference though loading saved games isn't possible without mods as the newest save games from 3.X and up are all modded. I verified the files too and even tried reverting back to an earlier version and that too shares the crashing issue now or crashes when starting the game but that is obviously a mod issue and not the fault of the game.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

I would guess it's something wrong with one of your saved factions and the new update. Normally if you remove mods then factions created with those mods have the modded data stripped from them, mostly, but maybe something is going wrong there. I don't remember where factions are saved offhand, but if you google it and then move your custom factions file out I would guess that would solve it. More surgically, if that works, is you could roll back your game version to a version that works, delete/edit the problem faction(s), and then switch back to the current version without losing most of your saved factions.

I fixed it about an hour ago by downloading the Halo mod... doesn't make much sense, but it worked for some reason. Although it does seem that the bugged UI issue from back in the 2.X era has returned so I will need to mess with the game a bit to fix it, if I remember correctly you just need to change the load order of your mods to fix it (though I haven't tested to see if I can get into an unmodded session yet so I don't know for sure if it's the 2.X UI bug connected to mods or if it's something present across the board if that makes sense.), oh and factions are located here:
