Custom Empires not saving?
Everytime I make a custom empire, after I close the game and reopen it the empire is gone from my custom empires list. I don't have any mods, this started happening right after I installed the Machine Age DLC, any ideas on how to fix this?

Not too sure why and how, although the files have the same name, but they a different in some reason.

First, move the "user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt" out of the file.
And then start a game to create a new empire.
The game will make a new "user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt" folder.
After that copy the old content to the new file.("Don't put the original file back.")
And then it's done. Somehow the game realize the folder again and able to rewrite it.....

Anyway, if someone else had the same problem, try it.:Blessing:

Do you have any mods?

Do your saved empires show up in "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\user_empire_designs.txt"?

As said, I haven't any mods, but I also figured out the problem anyways

There's a file called "user_empire_designs_v3.4" (or whatever the last version that updated the way they store the file would be) in your local documents folder, then Paradox Interactive/Stellaris. I think they did change the way they designate version numbers in the latest patch, at least for modders. So that may be why it's happening. But at any rate, once you locate the file, you can save a backup of it and then either restore the backup whenever you have this problem or perhaps even figure out what/why you're having the problem.

Ah sorry I missed that when reading. Glad you found a solution, happy gaming.

I have the same problem, and I found that it did not save my newly empires in the file. What should I do?

Replenish: Even I delete the empire, when I restart the game it come back.
That's mean my folder is not updating at all? what should I do to fix it?

If you have mods figure out which one could be causing it.

If you don't have mods or removing them doesn't fix it then my guess is it's most likely an access issue, try running the game as administrator.

Unfortunately, none of the above methods solved the problem. T_T
I also had this problem after I buy the Machine Age DLC. But after I tried to turn off the DLC, the problem still existed.

I tried to modify the content in the file "user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt". The data in the game will change accordingly. that mean the game is still reading my file data, but it cannot rewrite it. Even running the game as administrator.

From what you've explained I suspect it's a writing issue which administrator should fix. If that's the problem then here are my other ideas bit I'm not really sure how to fix them.
You may have a firewall that is blocking it.
Something is messed up in file permissions or worse.
It's a symptom of hardware failure.(hope it's not this)

I suggest making a post at paradoxplaza and see if someone there or a staff member can help you solve it.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

That is a strange solution, but if it works, it works. I'll try to remember it and point others to this thread if they report the same problem. Thank you for sharing the solution.

Computers are complicated and fickle things. I'm guessing something with the original file was corrupted in some way that was not obvious. Glad you were able to solve it.

Forgot that I made this thread but yeah this was the solution I discovered when I rad into the problem originally, in my experience this fix lasts only until you next close the game.

I had this issue and it recurs for me whenever I try to make a new empire or update an existing. I have to run the game, delete the above file. Then I can save a new empire/updated empire and it writes the file again.

This is getting tiresome cause I like to experiment.
