I’m not sure if it’s something DLC related or if it’s in the base game but individual planets also have an ascension mechanics that gives out bonuses and requires you to pay hefty fees in unity to unlock.
Alternatively you can download one of the many mod that add more traditions.
Even with mods that add more perks etc if you know what you're doing you'll plow through those pretty fast but vanilla by end game you'll be hard pressed to find unity useful for anything other than planetary ascension.
Just select your highest populated planets, like an ecumenopolis, and ascend it.
