How to form federations now?
From the game it makes it look like you need to unlock the tradition tree of the federation you want and then unlock it from the diplomacy tradition and pick it up from there. But it looks like from the wiki you can say be a mega corp rush diplo and then start the federation?

You could also start with the Common Ground origin (you can choose the federation type right after starting the game) or the Hegemony origin. Both of those origins start you with the required tradition already taken. The tidbit about megacorps and federations is just that they benefit by the trade league type of federation.

the diplo tree unlocks default federation, other trees open other types, but i believe megacorps get the trade fed unlocked by default while non corps would need to invest in mercantile for it.

You need at least the Federation tradition pick in Diplomacy.

From there, the Federation types available to you are determined by ethics, some civics, and other tradition trees.

Lol doesn't seem like there is a consensus on whats up, honestly love the game but the UI and its information are terrible mainly with giving out information which hurts even more that this is a grand strategy where info is key to everything. Always run into problem with upkeep costs for what or diplo/vassal loyalty stuff and whats giving bonus or taking them away.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

How so? you got 3 answers all verifying what each other said. Do you just not like the answer?
