Fleets do not fight
I have a problem with fleets. I've noticed a few times that my ships don't actually attack a target that they are supposed to attack. In the current case, the dragon is supposed to attack and destroy the last two stations. However, it doesn't fly to the stations, but to the point where it is now and circles happily around without firing a shot.

Unfortunately, the problem is not limited to the dragon. Fleets that I have sent there have also behaved in the same way. But they have entered a battle, so I can no longer control them. I can only pull them back, whereupon they are gone for years.

If I do nothing, it's an endless loop, because since not a single shot is fired, the battle is never resolved. -.-

I've had this before in a war against another civilization. I wanted to destroy an enemy troop transporter fleet, but both my ships and the transporters just circled around without ever getting within firing range. In the end, I could only stop it by withdrawing my fleet, which postponed the end of the war by a good 10 years. That's annoying.

Has anyone experienced this and does anyone know what can be done about it?

It is a very longstanding bug. Solution is to alt-f4 the month you see it and reload.

Thank you. Great, they endlessly bring out new and expensive DLCs, but something really annoying doesn't get fixed.
Does this mean that I can no longer conquer the system because I don't have a savegame that goes back far enough? I've been trying to clear the system for years. -.-

The bug Nabbut is talking about is a different one.

is this how to overcome it? because i get this bug a lot in my games, like 3 out of every 10 games has this bug.

It's happened to me many times. There are no ideal solutions. It will go on for years and years if you let it. The only two solutions I've found are to send a new fleet to join the fray (and hope it doesn't get bugged along with the ones already there) or to hit "retreat" and just eat the loss of position that entails.

Maybe it's not related... but I have had fleets just sit there and watch TV until I clicked the fleet stance making "aggressive," then they move in for the attack.

Sounds like it. It happens to ships when they're already engaged in combat. Both sides just spin in circles, like troop transports do.

I believe this bug has been fixed. At the very least, I haven't experienced myself in a long time, nor have I seen someone describe experiencing it. (What OP is describing is not the bug you're talking about.)

You seem to be giving a lot of advice on this forum that's 2+ years outdated. Have you been playing on old patches?

in the year of our lord 2025, this bug still persists.

and apparently it's been a bug since the game launched into 1.0 way back in 2016

yes, I can confirm from first-hand experiences within the last 72hrs, and the 2 solutions of either adding fleets to the bugged combat or reloading the game with alt+f4 are still the only viable solutions.

It's a different bug. The long-standing ship immunity bug that you read about in old posts caused ships to fly to the target and stand still while being fired at, not acknowledging the target as something worth firing at.

Ships doing combat movement and not attacking is a comparatively recent bug, likely introduced when they reworked fleet combat behavior.
weird, i have never in memory seen that happen...but my memory is ♥♥♥♥ tbh.
