Are custom species portraits no longer possible?
It's saying "Your current Design contains errors (or uses features from disabled DLCs) that must be resolved before continuing". I have ALL DLCs activated and fully enabled, so that's practically impossible, so what's the problem here?

I haven't played in a while, and the game is essentially blocking ALL custom species from being used (their portraits are still there on pre-made empires but are inaccessible/unuseable). Did they change something along the way, forcing us to use vanilla species only from now on?

This issue happens with ALL custom species portraits on the workshop, old and new. They are fully turned on and activated in the launcher, so they are clearly present in the game, but are forcefully hidden and made inaccessible for unknown/unidentifiable reasons.

Machine Age did introduce a new way of doing species portraits - "reactive portraits." There are a couple of dev diaries explaining it: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/281990?emclan=103582791439224844&emgid=4199119695789352921

This is the first I've heard of it breaking all other species portraits, though.

is the issue that modded custom species aren't working or that base game with dlc custom species arent working? if it the first one, its probably just the mods not up to date and causing issues, if its the second maybe the empires aren't valid because of old traits that got reworked or leader changes.

That makes sense. They're always changing something.

It was the first one. Never knew they changed it, then again I was too tired to go through it all when I got to it.

Some of my modded species are not showing up as well and some of them are. The ones that haven't been updated to this version are not showing up. What I can't figure out is what code is preventing them from showing up because the custom empires that have them still show the portraits but i just can't select them

Mods with species needs to be patched with the 2 new files that are needed in common alongside species_classes. portrait_sets and portrait_categories.
A little guide on how to do it
potraits_sets
cat_spe = { species_class = SPE portraits = { "spe1" "spe13" "spe2" } conditional_portraits = { portraits = { "spe4" } } # These should not be used for randomly generated species non_randomized_portraits = { "spe2" } }

potraits_categorie
spe_cat = { name = SPE sets = { cat_spe } }

i don't know anything about that, so I'll just wait for the creators to update them.

Thank you for this!

Are there any functioning portrait mods using this so I can actually see it working and try and adapt it? So far all the portrait mods I've tried, even the most popular front page ones are broken after the patch.
