Explorer vessel vs Science vessel

Can someone explain why I should waste resources building an "Explorer?" I just don't see how they are different from Science vessels. The explorer has weapons, but run from every flight.

you shouldn't have explorer vessels unless you have the eager explorers civic, they shouldn't have weapons, and you have them because you don't have science vessels until you research them.

once you have science vessels there's no need for explorers unless you want to specifically jump across impasses.

You can alter their fleet stance to not flee as well.
