I do love that too! To me that games feel like what the politics side of Mass Effect is! Making alliances and rivals and whatnot, it feels great!
And I'm currently playing a 30 civs game, and there are people on the other side of the galaxy I'm not involved in any way with, and probably won't for the whole game. But they're there, and they are doing their thing! :p
I do like that part - just letting the galaxy shape itself. My last game, I had this one little empire - a one world system of serviles who had revolted and driven out their slavelords (who themselves eventually got wiped out) and founded a hereditary kingdom of former slaves on this little desert world out on the edge of the galaxy. They had no politicians or even specialists because they were servile, and they didn't sign migration treaties because of xenophobia. So they just sat there doing their thing. They hated me, and I kinda eventually ended up enveloping them cuz of whatever weird politics happened - I think their neighbor voluntarily vassalized themselves to me and then I annexed that neighbor to emancipate their slaves.
But I just left them alone to their thing. So, like.... an 800 year dynasty on this dusty backwards backwater. It's really fun to kind of imagine what it'd be like for a character coming from that world into the wider galaxy. And to just have these little polka-dot polities scattered around your maps.
Close second is the galactic community and becoming emperor.
This one is a great example of what i mean. I had alot of paragons comming throught (you can see the immortal oracle in the background) and i had many interactions.
I had Skrand Sharpbeak fighting it out with my choosen of the Whisperers in the Void,
Oh and Nasuz Demetor finding a new passion in diplomacy and became one of my envoys.
Though the best story was the one nobody expect and outlifed most of them.
Keram, the Blorg and Ex of Nona, who hit rock bottom. Nona is asking for him, if he could become one of your governers. I excepted and he comes with 2 negative traits, melancholic and substance abuser. I wanted to give that poor Blorg a chance and over the Years he became what i can best describe to be the definition of that fat, giggely high pitched voiced Nobel who is on every high society party. Who looks harmless, but playes his cards well, gaining info and favor, aswell as playing out his power through private investments and connections.
Making it so far, he even became the leader of my empire.
What a succese Story.
One good reason why mods exist.
I don't see how this can even be a question. The beginning of the game is the best part, where there are still some unknowns and your choices matter. After the very early game, territory is snapped up, alliances are set, and you're left with whatever game the RNG dealt you.
I love the game, but after the first few decades achieving anything in response to information gained in the early game feels like a game-long commitment. Any pet projects I might want to develop, I feel like I need to be working towards them from empire creation and game start.
It's not exactly a criticism, just my explanation why the early game is the best.
