Unexpected independized vassal
I conquest and vassalized a hostile alien empire. Just a little after (I dunno if few months or very few years), part of it becomes independent; although at least it is now friendly towards me, and with different ethics/etc. Of course the not independized part keeps its bad attitude and ethics.

How have I lost that part? Could have I missclicked something? Any event that I ignored? How could I detect and prevent it in the future?

A vasall is still their own empire just with obligations to their overlord (you).
They still can have all the normal stuff happen like in this case a civil war that split the empire into different factions.
There is nothing you can do here, its not your domain, its a internal affair of the vasall empire.

So I cannot avoid it, just be aware that it can happen. Well, at least my new neighbours look easy to convince to be vassalized again, enjoying of the winds of freedom and democracy sooner that their ex compatriots.

Thanks for the info.

In Stellaris "satellite" or "client" would be a better starter term.
Historic vassals have a much stronger bond/debt with their overlord. Hegemonies and the galactic empire get closer to the historic meaning.

If you have the contract that calls you into their defensive wars, you should have been involved in suppressing the rebellion.

That being said I have had a bug in games I was playing on the newest patch where even clearly winning those wars would still leave the breakaway state independent. I was using mods so I never bothered to report it and just put it down to yet another functionally broken thing in the game.
