Major spoiler ahead
The Formless are no crisis and not even hostile by default, they are located in a special system which you can only reach after completing a certain astral rift.
They "bring" you there because they are besieged by the Abberant. If you destroy the fleets in the system a situation spawns, during which you have to defeat additional spawning Abberant fleets in certain intervals.
Afterwards depending on the choices you choose in the dialogue you either:
- get a paragon,
- the formless as vassal (or depending on rng them turning hostile)
- they turn hostile towards you.
If you get them as Vassal they will colonize the planet in they system but not expand beyond that, they are a fixed type of vassal that cannot be change.
Even if they turn hostile though they only get 2 fleets.
wow another useless things in game
If you help them, then claim their throne and defeat them in mortal combat:
- All your leaders are treated as immortal
- Size 40 gaia planet
- The core system with base 20 crystal mines
