Follow these suggestion because these gray tempest ships are VERY strong that can devastate fleet stronger than them that lacking point defense. With proper fleets strike their main factory FAST (located on far end l-cluster iirc) because in my experience they tend to have lots of fleets that slip past your defense.

I actually prefer Grey Tempest, I generally want to own the cluster anyway.

Spoiler
The gate builders are still the grey tempest in disguise XD

That sucks. Of all the times I've played through this game, I've only gotten Gray Tempest the last two playthroughs. My strategy is not to explore the L Gates until I have 5-6 full fleets, then make sure they consist of corvettes. Have all of your fleets in the system containing the L Gate when you open so you wipe out whatever comes through. Then immediately send all your fleets through the gate. Keep a couple of them on the system you travel to, while sending the rest to conquer the fleets in the rest of the L Gate system. Once you defeat all the fleets in the systems, the last Gray Tempest "home system" will open, and you'll need a couple of fleets to destroy everything in it.

You can go to the main grey tempest system directly anyway, no need to kill the rest first.

Be lucky you got some event to occur. My first playthru with the DLC resulted in "nothing" at the L gate, zero events, nada. Someone said it happens about 10% of the time. Was hoping for some great battle that never happened. Guess I'll have to wait for my next playthru.

I just have 2 or 3/4 full battleship fleets with Arc Emitter, 4 Medium disruptors, scoutcraft and either another two disruptors or 1 Cloud Lighting (if I could get voidclouds in my galaxy).
They are around 90k in fleet power, each.

My latest game I had 10 100k+ fleets by the time the L-gates were opened (for some reason they all spawned in one section of the galaxy a long way from my home region). I only bothered sending one fleet.

i did the research 7/7 and then another research relative to it but then tried to get the gate working and it didnt, major let down kinda made the rest of the game stale. we started getting desyncs very regularly by this point so iv put the game down permanently or untill they confirm a desync fix.

Well the L gates are random, it's not the entire game really. As for dealing with them.. well.. the best approach if you want to be cautious is to wait on opening it till your tech is up to par for a fight.
