New Crises
So, do you guys have any ideas for what could be a fourth crisis type? My idea would be an invasion from the Shroud, evil psionic demonic-type beings that create a portal from the Shroud into our reality. The crisis would have a higher chance of happening based on how many Spiritualist empires with Psionic pops there are.

Boring (exactly like Dimensional Invaders).

Let's have something like a Psychic Parasytes %)
So - spread of infection, quarantine, vaccines (first one usually failing & with up to severe flaws), outbreak of monsters from your species (invasion, then forming a fleet).

And yes, machines should be somewhat protected from first phase (until fleets will appear - as they would be powerful enough to capable to feed on MI personas & eating their worlds too).

Warp Beasts? Something that was mentioned by the Mirror Universe version of us through the Doorway Portal Event.
So some kind of invasion of multiple of a 100+ Leviathans like "Warp Beasts" or Dragons or other Guardian Leviathans. Maybe also some just migrating through that pass by the galaxy and your objective is just to survive them not defeat them. Defeating them comes after the bulk passes through and you and other empires need to clean the stragglers that stayed behind.
Edit: This could also explain how the galaxy's Guardian Leviathans and others Spaceborne like Crystalline Entities, Space Amoebas, Ancient Mining Drones, Void Clouds, and Tiyanki came from.

That sounds interesting and new!

A little off topic, but can the warp beasts simply just be the unbidden?

Pretty sure that's just unbidden. Something like the zenith miners from ai war 2 could be cool. Powerful singular units with colossi weapons to add some extra spice making any territory lost truly smashed to pieces spawning swarms weaker units with every crack.

Would an armada of teleporting enemy fleets that sense you defense give a new challenge?
A decently strong fleet teleports into one of the, at thge time, least defended systems (by starbases and ships). They attack the system for a random, but limited time, if they take over it they gain strength. They then blink out, often before you have time to get backup to the system.
The way to beat them would be to have highly defended system that can sustain the attack before they blink out and/or having a dense network of gates and hyperlinks and fast ships so you can respond very quick. Kind of whack-a-mole game.

My ~600 speed battleship fleets and bunch of Gateways would not notice any kind of problem to catch them ;)

Going cruisers as backbone of navy it would be not a problem at all.

This is already here. Sort of...
Go for Psychic ascension.
Make a Covenant with End of the Cycle and wait for it's coming.
You'll have your 4th (and probably most terrfying) End Game Crisis.
You want the Devil ? You have to make it intersting in comin for ya...

I see that.
What if they in addition disables local gateways and hyper relays when they attack? So you have to have fleets on guard in neighbour systems.

You could probably get a whack-a-mole style crisis to work, but would it be interesting to play, or just super-annoying?

Doppleganger Dimension. A portal opens in each empire in your game, and out of it comes an exact 1:1 copy of their fleet - every ship they have has an exactly equal opposite. So no meta to escape it. Every new ship built spawns a mirror reinforcement from the portal Somehow they'd convert conquered planets into shroud worlds, which would give their ships some kind of buff relative to the dimensional locals.

A series of special projects like with the contingency would be required to figure out how to seal off their portals. You could have a subplot about mirror dimension infiltrators too - maybe an AI ruler gets replaced by their doppleganger and allies his nation with the invaders.

Basically you'd just have to play defensively for time until you figured out a way to reverse it.

A new game +, you start out with on fleet from your previous game, and enter a pre-generated galaxy, you are the crisis, survive and relearn your lost technology. You old ships cannot be replaced once lost.
