Auto ship designer - minor artifacts
I use the automatic ship designer as I can't be bothered to update my designs every time i discover a new tech. The addition of ship upgrades which use minor artifacts has completely broken this system. If i have the maximum of 3K and i lose a fleet or just want to upgrade a fleet it just isn't practical now. Can you please either provide an option to not include these upgrades in auto-generated designs or provide 2 options when building ships (much like federation ships)

Next update. Meanwhile either don't research them, or just make a new design replacing the artifact components with regular ones.

Unless you are constantly at war, you dont need to update your ship builds every time you have researched a new tech. I update them like once every 5 new techs and i use like 2-3 ships builds, so its like 10 clicks every 30min or so. Not really a lot of work.

Artifacts or not, first step to "gettin' gud" in Stellaris is to stop using the auto-design and auto-upgrade functions. Ship design is pretty crucial, letting the PC do that is almost like automating your economy.



Example:

1) Early game - If not going against other empires, you face a lot mining drones, amoebae, crystals etc.

Every time you research something, the auto-design will shift between something like picket + missile + coilgun, to random mix of lasers or disruptors, until you research autocannons then it's mostly going to use that. But these ships are terrible against space fauna.

Instead use Plasma in all slots, and you can kill stuff your own fleet size with 0 losses. Or much stronger targets with a few losses.



2) Vassalize - Simply use autocannons in all slots which have triple the nominal DPS of any other weapon, regardless of their inability to destroy armor. Any friendly AI will be greatly impressed and surrender its independence for the rest of the game, if you have outteched them sufficiently.



3) Early Game wars vs other Empires - e.g. Autocannon, Laser, Plasma is balanced and should win most battles



4) Final tech tiers - Battleships with only whirlwind missles + strike craft + point defense can reliably handle anything, even excels at several types of enemy

Seems like you are a bit confused about the amount of work that goes into not using the auto ship designer. Generally, you design a ship at the start of the game / when you unlock it, and unless you want to change some components, you just allow the auto designer to do the updating, and that's it. That's minimal work, maybe 10 minutes per game - less once you know what designs you want - and the results are 20 times better than auto designed ships, even without the minor relic issue.

Not only that, but you really want to design your ships around who you are going to fight. You can reduce your own loss's by a lot doing this.
