Thanks for killing my save game Paradox, epic.
Was in the middle of a really fun run with lots of habitats, and not aware the game was getting an update today.
So it auto updated and without thinking about it i loaded into my save, which for some reason causes the game to save over it again.
So now my 1 iron man save is converted to 3.9, and reverting to 3.8 still leaves the habitats in such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ state that it's unplayable.

So yeah just wanted to say thanks for that, very cool.
Maybe don't have the game save over the 1 file when it loads into a new version, have it create a new file or something, cause this is really dumb.

Nobody to blame but yourself. Loading the save file even though you had realized that the game had received an update, and the update message probably warns about save file compatibility like it always does, was a really bad mistake.

Yeah it's partially my own fault, but ♥♥♥♥ me for being eager to get back to my game right?
I also wasn't aware the game would save when just loading in.
So i figured i could just hop in the save folder and backup the old one should it be very incompatible.
Turns out it broke my empire setup entirely, but the damage was already done.

The game should either not overwrite a save from an older version and create a new file instead, or just not allow you to load saves from an older version.

I mean yeah. Don't get me wrong, it's an understandable error, and it's a bummer that you lost your save to it, but when you start blaming others for your mistakes, that's just where the sympathy stops. It was your mistake, and your mistake alone.

But of course it does, otherwise you could just install some mod that, for example, gives you access to information you should not have, load the game, look at what you want to look at, quit without saving, and uninstall the mod.

I've kind of arrived at the opinion that requiring ironman for achievements is a bad idea, but that's what they went with, and it's quite obvious that such a check needs to be in place.

Save files from older versions can often be compatible, so I don't think not allowing you to load them at all would be a good solution.

As for creating a new file though, that seems fair to me. It's a very niche issue, and maybe it doesn't warrant the development time to require such a feature, but I don't see any obvious reason for why that cannot work. So if you really want it implemented, I'd recommend you hop over to the Paradox forums and suggest it as a proper suggestion.

Well... it has been the subject of conversation for over a month.
It sucks to lose a save but it was easily preventable.

I do think you should be able to set it to not automatically download update for both games and mods, or have it confirm the installation of them, but that is a Steam issue.

To be honest and in defense of the OP, many of the respondents are regulars in the forum, so they were very aware; surely they saw videos with incoming changes and blahblah.

But most gamers don’t do that and ARE NOT UNDER ANY OBLIGATION TO DO THAT. They just play the game and don't visit the forums, and that’s normal.

I try to visit the forums now and then, and even me, also in the middle of the campaign just heard yesterday about the incoming update.

IDK Perhaps instead of bombarding us with publicity in an obligatory launcher to buy the last pack, give people a sort of warning of the incoming update, with which hours of gameplay may be lost

What? In order to press play on Steam you have to somehow miss the GIGANTIC colorful "HEY HERE IS A GIANT UPDATE" notification right underneath it.

This is after you probably had to press update before you could even press play.

Then you had a warning when you tried to load a save that it may bork things up.

No. "Being fair" here is calling him out on his zombielike unaware habits.

Not their fault they don't bother to read that stuff!
What can you do?

Steam tells you to update the game. Two of the three news items in the Launcher are about the 3.9 update, and the news post specifically states in highlighted letters:

"Please note that save file compatibility between versions is not guaranteed.

If you have an important 3.8.4 game going, please back up the save file before trying to load the save in 3.9.1. You can roll back to a prior version by right-clicking on Stellaris in your library -> Properties -> Betas -> choose the 3.8.4 from the drop-down."

There's a giant popup telling you that the game was updated. To be fair, it say anything about save file compatibility in this case, so maybe that's not ideal.

But I don't see how anyone could MISS the update. Like, what else are they supposed to do to make you aware? Kick your door in and slap you in the face before pointing you to any of the warnings?

Yeah, no. OP is right on this.
Stellaris' infrastructure issues are chronic and well documented. Saves transferring between updates has been miserable since forever, and Paradox ought to do more to alleviate these problems given their insane DLC pricing.

That'd be a completely unreasonable waste of resources. They'd have to write a whole bunch of code, do specific QA tasting on it, and all just to migrate things from one patch to another, and that code would be useful exactly once in the patch cycle, and only for a limited amount of players. The current solution where they give you the ability to roll back works perfectly fine (minus mod updates, but that's a steam issue and can be circumvented with Irony Mod Manager), people just have to make use of it.

And they are not under any obligation to communicate but if they didn't people would rant even more. I am pretty sure they would gladly do something else than write pages of dev diaries like actors don't care of promoting a movies done 6-8 months ago or many professions doing tone of paperwork unrelated to the core of their job ...

So now you do all the paperwork but the guy tell you F... y.. because he made mistake himself when you have well prepared your part... how you would react ?

If only they had given us a huge warning in advance that save games would be messed up from previous versions >.> then you could have backed up your save and reverted game version to play it... oh wait they did

It shouldn't. If you alt-F4 before doing anything it shouldn't overwrite.
Updates don't necessarily break saves anyway, it depends on the actual changes.
I kept an ironman save funtional across several major version updates.
Just this one happened to be a very major change that makes habitats in specific basically non functional.

Each time someone has too little time to read the same thing posted again and again.

Rollback your version and keep playing...
