3.9.... 4.0?
Just curious from the stellaris veterans about how long should we expect we have before 4.0 will come out? If a lot of the core game is going to change should I just wait to play a lot when that happens or am I safe to play and learn now without everything shifting super soon?

If you want stability, I think you're best off picking your back version that gave you the most fun and hanging out there. Continuity of mechanics and preservation of your saves are not high priorities for these devs. So, either that or (probably the wisest choice) just finding a more stable title you enjoy.

From my 6,000 hours of game play I can give you only one answer, utter impossible to tell.
It's PDX we're talking about here.
You always has the option of "reverting" game version though.

It's a mot more likely that the next Update will be 3.10

What azunai said. Software versions aren't decimal numbers.

Next patch is 3.10, not 4.0, unless they just happen to to be planning some major changes in the game that warrants the major version jump. So far, there's no evidence that they're planning such dramatic changes at the current time, and leader rework aside, the current team has been pretty conservative with toying around with major game elements, and instead mostly added new things.

Actually they are, the first number represents major changes the next number is large updates and the third is for smaller updates. Lesser numbers after that are for bug fixes and balance changes such as 0.2 would be an early access game in progress 1.0 would be the official release 1.1 would be a major update 1.15 would be an update of sizable amount but not quite "dlc" size and 2.0 would be a major reworking of the games systems.

Such as the update from 1.8 to 2.2 changing the tile system on planet construction to the one you know now and adding more materials and resources to the game. Not trying to pick a fight but thought you may want to know how it all breaks down (each company does things a little different but the numbers usually tell a story that is nearly universal.

Next patch is 3.9 according to the dev post, but from what I've seen from replies it will be quite awhile before I need to worry about 4.0 so I'll play hard for a few months and then if I get burnt out after the 4.0 I can come back and see what's new and changed :)

At worse 33% of the game logic and systems will still be there. I personally can work with those kind of ratios. But I won't have to as I play stellaris more frequently than that.

I meant the next patch after 3.9. But yeah, whether it's 3.10 or 4.0, it'll be a while after the current patch.

Yes I understand how that works, but if they were decimal numbers it would mean they'd have to go from 3.9 to 4.0. Cant have 3."10" in decimal system that's the same as 3.1.

Afterall, many would consider the economy change something worthy of a full version change, but it was only 2.1 to 2.2, while PDX considered the Intel and and first contact rework a 3.0 change (but that was smaller than both the economy and the war/expansion rework)

it's PDX after all, they might update to 3.20 with massive changes to every system with every update and then decide that giving tiyanki 1 more hull is 4.0 worthy
