How to stop an AI Federation?
I'm currently in a galaxy dominated by AI megacorps, and one of them is somehow snowballing their influence by inviting everyone to join their Federation. Not even joking, nearly half the galaxy has joined. I would join too, but two of their members loath my empire, so I can't attempt to destroy them from within.

What do I do from here?

At that point you just have to make the galaxy burn...

It may be possible to get them to like you enough to let you in, atlernatively make a second federation and try to get as much of the rest of the galaxy in. Then fortify to hell and back for the inevitable galaxy wide war. Getting the galactic defence force through to get an extra mega fleet would help win it.

If you have Nemesis you can use Smear campaign. it damages the federation's cohesion by -20 each time it's performed. Cohesion is rated at a scale of -100 to 100,
Basically what you do is target as many federation members with smear campaign as you can simultaneously to knock down their cohesion. After that you want to hit them with spark diplomatic incident. This will force them to recall or sacrifice an envoy. Further crippling their ability to keep their their cohesion up.

It probably won't take much to break up their federation. The more members a federation contains the easier it is to break apart due to the myriad of cohesion penalties that come from differing ethics etc.

If you're lucky the two empires that hate you will be the first to leave.... allowing you to get in and take control.

Keep in mind this isn't a fool proof method. The way empires take in vassals these days makes war a bit of an inevitability. But you can at least weaken them enough to pick them off one by one.

Yeah I'm afraid that's not an option, because I'm currently surrounded by those guys.

Even if some of the empires have chosen you as a rival and hate you, it is always possible to change their mind. If you haven't done anything seriously offensive to them yet, send as many envoys as possible to strengthen the relationship. You can send them resources such as 1000 orange crystals, this will also help strengthen the relationship and in some cases can be a decisive factor in becoming friends. Strengthening relationships is easier than trying to undermine an already formed alliance.

Well, I hope it works well against hegemonies.

You can always open the federation tree yourself and make sure your federation controls half the galaxy.

Wait what? Smear campaigns do something?

I always use my excess influence on smear campagins, i finish dozens of them in each run/game, but there was never a noticable effect. No federation member left, no vassal revolted. The only emprires that fight wars are the ones that hate eachother since early game.

This makes late mid game and late game very stagnant and boring. I usually spend my late game clicking on repeatables and waiting for the crisis to spawn ... which is why i dont finish most games.

Been smearing the hell out of this hegemony, no noticeable effects so far. Managed to get sensor data on these guys while they went to war with an Fallen Empire, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, these guys can put the zerg to shame with how they zerg. Over a million fleet power, fleet after fleet pouring across the border like a tidal wave, carrying enough firepower to melt most opposition.

At this point I'm just waiting for the crisis so I can trigger the lure crisis espionage event in hopes that it will be enough to dismantle this Federation.

Another option is to make yourself a galactic custodian -> declare yourself an Emperor. That will destroy all federations in galaxy community.

Becaming a Crisis (especially if you have Paragon DLC) is a viable option too. Menancing ships with 90% ship cost discout & filled with archeotech (nano-missiles and ancient shields are <3) are crazily OP.
