The Commonwealth of Man almost always struggles because they get along so poorly with aliens. UNE is a strong mix of traits, which is why its the "starter civ" for most new players. How the UNE plays out can depend a lot on who they team up with. They tend to look for civilizations that match them on two out of three ethics, so I just finished a game where they'd knitted together a coalition of the galaxy's worst slavers (fanatically egalitarian xenophobes who still had 2/3 overlap with their own way of looking at things). They started on the far side of the galaxy from me, and I spent a big chunk of the midgame swatting down their colonial misadventurism in my sphere of space. If they pick their friends unwisely they can have a lot of enemies that the player can team up with. Sometimes they do just draw the short stick and get munched by a neighbor before they really pick up steam.

I've only ever seen the Commonwealth get powerful once. I don't know if they proposed the Martial Alliance I found them in or if one of the other two empires within it did but the 3 of them together were kicking everyone else around. I was going pacifist in that save and had some allies of my own.

Inevitably one ally was attacked so my pacifist fleets went over and stopped right at the border systems while the others went on the offensive. I just made sure the MA didn't take any territory and I would move forward whenever my own took territory. Worked out really well but it was long. If it had just been me then I would've moved forward and wrecked them. Sometimes the "fist" in pacifist has to be embraced.

That's how you tried to say "xenophilie is easiest to play now, while xenophobic is hardest" :)

to OP: currenly making alien friends and vassals >> staying a lone wolf (it require player level of skill to survive from being ganged from all sizes). That's why UNE is looking superior.

I think UNE is an advanced start if they are spawned by the Commonwealth script

Yes, at least they should be (that's how Lost Colony working for "normal" aliens).

I say what I mean, and if anyone needs a clarification they are welcome to ask me. You are not qualified to serve as any kind of interpreter for me. State your own opinions and leave me out of them.
