Inevitably one ally was attacked so my pacifist fleets went over and stopped right at the border systems while the others went on the offensive. I just made sure the MA didn't take any territory and I would move forward whenever my own took territory. Worked out really well but it was long. If it had just been me then I would've moved forward and wrecked them. Sometimes the "fist" in pacifist has to be embraced.
to OP: currenly making alien friends and vassals >> staying a lone wolf (it require player level of skill to survive from being ganged from all sizes). That's why UNE is looking superior.
