First Contact: is this DLC worth it?
Hey!
I've played this game for a long time with a friend. We discussed this upcoming DLC and came to the conclussion that it feels like a money grab. It feels like you're paying for a few origins and should be within the price range of a specie pack. But somehow it's within price range of a few of the big DLCs.

What do the rest of you think? Is it worth it or is this a money grab?

We don't even know what all the features are yet and you're jumping to conclusions already.

In addition to the origins there's also archeotech, stealth mechanics and permanent buffs from researching pre-FTL civilizations and some new civics on top of that but that's about all we know so far.

Maybe it's overpriced for the content it offers or maybe it's actually worth it every penny but either way you're not obligated to buy it.

It does have a 50% price raise over the other story packs so there's that.

That's a dumb question. Assuming you have sufficient expendable income, all DLCs are worth it, as all of them add to your experience, however little.

Assuming you don't have a lot of expendable income, we have no idea what your unique economic situation is, and therefore can't determine "worth" for you. Imo, $20 bucks is throwaway money, but for all I know, that's food for a month for you.

If you can't risk $20 on the DLC being underwhelming, don't buy it. If you can, then there's no harm in buying it.

Don't forget inflation the last few years has been INSANE so if that helps at all everything is around 30-80% more expensive than it was before. I have to do the same mental jump at the grocery store like WTF COOKIES ARE $5 oh but they should be like $3.. inflation blows

My me it is only $16, not $20.

The last Story Pack was in 2019, almost 4 full years ago. There's been some inflation since then.

Also, we don't only get a bunch of ArcheoTechs (14?) but also an unknown number of Insight Techs, presumably at least 8 or 10.

Maybe the OP just doesn't like the concept of Story Packs. That's his problem. I like them a lot, and I'm glad they're back after such a long hiatus.

Its not even out yet and people are complaining.

Peak PDX 'fans'.

No such thing as "DLCs".
The "C" in DLC stands for "content" which is a mass noun, it doesn't have a plural and so doesn't get an "s" added to it.

(And before anyone says it, yes "contents" is also a word, but it isn't the plural of "content".)
Jorgas Mar 1, 2023 @ 12:26am
No paradox DLC is ever worth the "content" it brings, and they know it very well, which is why all DLCs include new modding code/features that is locked unless you own the DLC.

So unless your mod makers are making content that's relying on DLC code, don't ever buy ,

And if you're still going to buy, atleast don't do it on steam, since you can get every single paradox DLC at 50-67% discount even on release day, by buying from a company that does not charge 25-33% of the sale and regional pricing difference.

I just do not care and buy them all right from the start, because I follow the development and I see that overall it goes in the right direction.
So I vote with my money for Stellaris.
You don't pay => Stellaris team gets less funding => Eventually it closes => You play some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games instead

Strictly speaking no DLC ever was worth the asking price if you compare it to the price of the base game.
EleventhStar Mar 1, 2023 @ 3:42am
$15 for a new layout for the primitive civ buttons + some new events seems steep. even $10 is pushing it considering games where you don't have a primitive civ are quite common.

not really expecting much from stealth since so little of the marketing has gone into it.

sounds like a wait for big discount unless you really like an origin dlc.
TigerRus Mar 1, 2023 @ 4:14am
Probably not. Paradox seem to be peddling the minimum for the max price these days
steven1mac Mar 1, 2023 @ 4:53am
No one really knows, but prices are to steep for the majority of the DLC that Paradox releases.

This is both the most intelligent post on this thread and yet will change absolutely nothing. Most people (including myself) will continue to use DLCs.
