OK, after 1.1K hours and countless replays, I've finally snapped
Actually, I've been pissed off for over a thousand hours, but tonight I just lost it.

"PAUSE". Do you understand what that means, Paradox? English, MF! Do you speak it?!

When I hammer the space bar to PAUSE the game, it means F'ING STOP the game! I want everything, short of music, to F'ing STOP! (is this getting thru?). I've PAUSED because I'm intending to give a ship or planet orders and want the game to PAUSE. Invariably, after left-clicking the ship and just before right-clicking the destination, A F'ING DIALOG INTERRUPTS with some UNWANTED message and/or choice. AHHHHHHHHH! Is this some lol feature by the programmers to f**k with the players? How else has this BUG survived so many revisions? Does Paradox have any product managers who lived? JHC! PAUSE MEANS FULLY PAUSING THE F'ING GAME!!

Sigh. OK, I've vented. TYVM.

P.S. Whoever coded the closing of the Technology window after changing the scientist deserves an extended stay in the 9th circle of Hell.

When the game is paused it will say so in the upper right, so maybe you changed some auto-pause settings in the menu and are confusing yourself.

Face palm. Seriously?

Sequence for clarity:

1. Pause (Third line: "When I hammer the space bar to PAUSE the game...")
2. Game is "paused". The word "Paused" is clearly shown in the upper right.
2. Left-click on ship.
3. Thoughtfully move mouse pointer to target system.
4. Right-click on system, hoping to pick a choice from drop down.
5. Dialog pops up: "PAY ATTENTION TO THIS EVENT!" (that could have waited).

Thanks for caring.

Do you play with mods and have you looked into whether some are conflicting with each other?

If not mods it honestly sounds like you unpaused the game yourself by accident and didn’t realize it. Not trying to offend , we all make mistakes. Just never heard of this issue before

naw it's a real bug. Doesn't happen often, but since 3.4 the GUI will sometimes get confused and relay information for the wrong game state. In other words it'll read as paused when the game is actually still going and pause the game when the game GUI is reading that it's running.

Not sure exactly what causes it. Could be a matter of hitting the pause button to quickly in rapid succession. Or it could have something to do with window focus (such as using the steam overlay). I've only run into the issue twice so it's not something most people will probably have to deal with.

The more obnoxious bug for me right now is that the ingame wiki browser isn't loading properly on the linux version. Not the worst problem to have. But it's probably my favorite feature for the game tbh. So it being broken makes me rather sad.

The real problem is there is no consistent behavior for when closing a message un-pauses the game. Some do, some don't and it is indeed maddening at times.

I agree, if paused then everything should pause, including the pop up messages, it cant be that hard to fix, just make the effort and fix it.
SVaughan Feb 27, 2023 @ 9:01pm
And PDX devs will NEVER see this. Because they never check Steam. But good vent. I should vent at some point here as well.

That cannot happen the way you describe it.

When the game's paused, it's paused, no gameplay ticks happen, and while the clock's not ticking, no events can pop up unless you trigger them by clicking buttons in the UI.

And since you seem to have been experiencing this issue for quite a while given the "survived so many revisions" comment, the chance that this is user error and not some bug that basically nobody else has noticed yet, is probably around 99.9%.

+1 on Ryika.

Maybe less incoherent screaming and more telling us what the actual problem is.

happens quite a lot tbh. early game on fastest (when the game actually runs fast) it's not that uncommon to get 2-3 different popups at the same time that are a couple days apart, but of which the first one autopauses the game.

mayabe it's cause of all those performance fixes paradox has done that make not everything process on actual days.

can totally see OPs situation happening if it happens within 2-3 seconds of pausing.
