Releasing vassals and forming federations with them
Hello,

I constantly see the strategy of settling a single system, creating a vassal, then releasing them to form a Trade League or something of the kind. I've tried it several times and despite the Federation having a positive acceptance at the point of release, it always nosedives before the deal goes through and I'm having no luck pulling this off. Is there a way to further guarantee a released vassal will quickly accept a Fed request?

Unless it's been changed since i did it last time, all you really need to do is make sure they like you a lot before you let them go.

In a nutshell don't release them too soon

If you release them on the same day as founding them - It is normal that the acceptance starts green, but then drops below 0 before they answer the offer. It climbs back up within months, though.

Since i only give them 1 planet/habitat, i always gift them thousands of basic resources and some alloys/CGs, just so they don't starve and can build up their capital. This gives a huge opinion bonus and you can trade plenty of favors, too. IIRC the opinion bonus is capped at +100 acceptance, don't remember.

Also make sure you start them with your founder species, this gives an extra opinion bonus.

For reasons why they don't immediately want to join:

If you are (fanatic) xenophile, they will be too. So there is nothing speaking against the federation per se.

Check why they don't accept it right now - AI Xenophiles can randomly use a pacifist war policy (although this isn't default), so this may give -50 for "war policy allows wars of aggression". You can change the policy to defensive, and change back to unrestricted after 10 years. Or wait until the acceptance goes enough positive on its own.

Of course if you are e.g. xenophobe, militarist or authoritarian, this may not work at all.

If it say "distance", this may be if you abandoned an outpost to give them only 1 system (otherwise they may get a full sector of YOUR space). Rebuild the outpost you deleted, the distance penalty goes away immediately.

Perhaps other reasons i don't recall. Either way you can always get +50 acceptance from favors. And don't release them in the vicinity of other empires so they don't ask them for vassalization

Gotcha. They absolutely love me, but tend to have a -50 malus (somtimes an extra -10 depending on the AI personality that forms) that I can't seem to get over no matter how much I give them. So keeping them as a vassal longer and building up loyalty is a good way to better ensure it? My main fear is that they'll get immediately swept up by another AI if I don't get them as soon as they become independent.

Can you release just one system or do you have to release a full sector?

you release an entire sector, BUT sectors only cover connected systems

so

have a "sector" be a single system, and release

How do you keep a sector one-system-size? If you create a sector, it automatically expands 4 systems in each direction.

i don't think you're understanding

a sector ONLY connects to connected systems

have a single isolated system with a planet, turn that single system into a single system sector

release

Eh... you're right, I don't get it.
If I create a sector, it automatically expands to ALL connected systems, because all systems are interconnected, more or less. How do you isolate a system from all other systems? Deleting all outposts surrounding that system?

yes

or just building an outpost in a system not bordering your other systems

Like cmon man, i feel like i'm spoon feeding this to you at this point

I hoped for a less gamey way. Alas.

nope, years ago you could make a sector a single system, or your entire empire a single, massive sector

the devs didn't like that

so they decided it'd be best to to have all sectors be the same arbitrary size

I remember. I started playing Stellaris when update 1.9 hit. I preferred the way sectors worked before (preferred the customization over the potential for exploitation (one mega-sector, as you mentioned and was one of the major argument against this mechanic. I never did it this way, but I guess people need saving from themselves instead of exercising restraint)).

i wish there was a mod to restore this feature, i never got the chance to experience such unprecedented levels of control

So if anyone is a scrub like me and needs a solid answer later, trading a ton of consumer goods/minerals let me build up max favors over and over very quickly which let me federate and then dominate whatever votes I wanted for the federation. I hadn't realized the favor system was that exploitable for federations. Neat.
