If a game is running, you can join it (provided the host allows) at any time and simply take over a place the AI has been running. If you drop out, the AI takes over your place. Games sync at start for everyone in the lobby, and I *think* when you join, you get a transfer of the current state as the game pauses for the ones playing.
Would certainly be interesting to get to know other empires. Players should however be allowed to lock their empires preventing players apart from the AI to mess with the game.
I wonder whether the mod checksums will return. Might be interesting to know what you can edit without excluding yourself from MP
