Stellaris
Why are most people call Stellaris a "4X strategy" rather than a "Global strategy".
I understand that it's supposed to be both, but I'm sick of people comparing stellaris to Master of orion or galciv 3 or other 4X set in space, I mean Stellaris isn't even turn-based! I very rarely see EU4 called a "4X strategy", needless to say it being compared to, say, Endless Legend or Civilization.

I've got to admit that I'm not a big fan of games with sci-fi setting, hence I didn't like most of 4x games set in space, so maybe there is some similarities I didn't understand about space 4X games or 4X genre in general.

Is there some subtle feature that makes Stellaris like other games commonly known as "4X strategy"? Or is it just have to be set in space and all of the sudden it's a 100% 4X?

these 2 i agree, but the other 2 are going to by total optional, you dont need to go war to win the game, that what make Stellaris different and unique among the 4x games.

I disagree. You don't need to go to war (and exterminate) to win the game in any 4X game. Stellaris isn't different in these terms at all, because (most) 4X games have both a diplomacy and a science victory condition.

And btw: Exploit is about exploiting resources. Not related to war in any way ;)

There are quite a lot of people interested in Stellaris which are not used to any grand strategy games. And the first impression (based on trailers & screenshots) looks pretty much just like a common 4X game. These people are going for these comparison because a) the don't have any experience in grand strategy games and b) they didn't look for the differences and what this games is about (beside the usual 4X components).

They are calling the game that because they never heard the term grand strategy. Or because they watched the angry joe interview. Joe asks if it was a 4x or grand strategy and the answer was basically what ever makes you happy or both.
Other 4x games are like playing checkers. Stellaris is like playing chess.
Well i do gotta say the gameplay feels alot like galactic civ, star ruler 2, and endless space. Except with a bunch more mechanics at work.
But i feel that's just the price for going the space route, you really can't deepen mechs with out crossing a border shared by another game.
You can pick out a FTL travel method (much like star ruler) its a neat idea that deepens the variance the game.
You can customize you'r civ like most other space games.
The combat has ballistic, beam, missile weapon systems much like, again, every other space game.
ect.
So getting upset over comparing a game to its counter parts when it shares alot more simularities with that genre is silly in my books :3

Well. In short because it is a 4X Game? The issue is here more, that a lot of games are actually 4X. You need to be much more specific in my opinion because Stellars is a more like a 4X/RT/Grand Strategy game.
Well, maybe because even the devs stated that the game plays like a 4X?

Doomdark said something along the lines in one of their promo videos "Stellaris, starts pretty much like a 4X and then mid game, when you start interacting with other species, it starts to resemble more a grand strategy game".

Papa preach
to be honest grand strategy is reserved for historical games if you look it up.....so lets just agree that this is a Real-Time 4X Space game and be done with it....
4X is more or less the basic genre. Stellaris fits the bill and therefore is called as such. However, it is also a "global / grand strategy" game, which is more or less a sub-category of 4X (but not always).
