Psionic theory
Has anyone actually gotten psionic theory while playing materialist?

According to wiki using maniac scientist should be giving it 3 times the weight against the repeatable techs but it hasn't shown up after over a dozen techs.

The only reason I can think of is if the materialist penalty trumps the chance modifiers and makes it so it is absolutely mandatory to somehow get a psionic scientist so I can get it.

I feel like the wiki is wrong on this one. I've been trying to figure it out as well. The Spiritualist ethos is supposed to be the one that gives you Psi techs, I feel like maybe they got swapped on the wiki somehow? I'd love to see / hear if someone was able to prove you get this tech through being Materialist.

Never. You have a 0.05x modifier if you're materialist without psionics focus. I've never ever gotten it as materialist though, but gotten it frequently as Spiritualist, and fairly frequently as races without either ethos.

You need a researcher with psionic trait to get the very first tech (psionic theory) if your empire has (fanatic) materialist ethos.

Maniacal trait is just an option to increase chances in case of any other ethos.

modifier = {
factor = 0
AND = {
OR = {
has_ethic = "ethic_materialist"
has_ethic = "ethic_fanatic_materialist"
}
NOT = {
research_leader = {
area = society
has_trait = "leader_trait_expertise_psionics"

Unfortunately you can't get the psionic trait without the tech in the first place iirc.

Would make sense. The wiki said 0.05x modifier, but I've read somewhere that being materialist basically locks it out.

It's fair though, materialist is strong enough without the psionic line.

0.05 weight modifier is just the base modifier (for any ethos except spiritualist and materialist)

0 in case of (fanatic) materialist
2 in case of spiritualist
3 in case of fanatic spiritualist.

Makes sense and seems fair to me.

Ye that's what I assumed, I was just hoping the maniac trait was able to bypass the materialist penalty.

0 if fanatic materialsist you sure :(
wiki doesn't specify different penalties.

I heard it was possible to get a psionic scientist from a random event.

Except when trying to chase an enemy empire with psi jump drive and they can jump across half your side of the galaxy.

I actually quoted the weight modifier in the third post. 100% sure that it's 0 for both materialist and fanatic materialist. No chance at all.
Unless you get the psionic scientist by an event or by some other incident (but it's indeed not possible as a regular trait without the tech - checked the files for the trait. it's a prerequisition.)

Still possible to go for regular jump drives though... if you have wormhole FTL ;)

Ah I see what you mean, the 0.05x chance is if any other ethos other than spiritualist except materialist.

Correct ;)
So I just have to find that elusive random event I heard about that gives a psionic scientist.
Ha yeah I've had no luck getting the tech without the Spiritualist ethos, luck be with you!
I have learned psi theory as materialist just got lucky when he/she lved up and learned the trait.
