Aliens I cant investigate
I found a strange system right next to my home system so its within the starting empire, no planets and just a ring of asteroids and 4 clusters of alian (ships?) that look like green pollen spores.
When I first found it I got the normal message to investigate Alpha Aliens, but there wasnt a task for this, I later got tasks to investigate beta eta gamma alians etc... but I still havent been able to investigate these aliens.
There is obviously something interesting going on here, but short of just building a fleet and clearing them out I dont know what I can do to learn more.

Has anyone else come across this problem, or this strange system?

I believe I've seen similar occurances with new aliens. I'm suspicious that it has to do with save files. If you meet an alien, don't start the mission, save the game, exit and reload, the mission is no longer available. I've found no way to trigger the mission to appear again in the logs.

I have had problems with unknown aliens where the game tells me I need to research them in the situation log yet the situation log is empty.

Yep, same problem here. With me, it's always been an alien station, not a fleet. There's an option to research which takes you to the log but there is no option to research the aliens in it.

Happens all the time. I have been assuming they are aliens that spawn because of an AI event or something. Like more often than not they are aliens I already know about and have already identified, like amoebas, or mining drones. I once had an entire system full of mining drones completely respawn within a year of clearing it out, and all of them were yellow, non-hostile, and considering unidentified. It's all sorts of buggy.

I also have the same issue. It's another broken quest line. The quest doesn't update as I kill amoeba (I'm fanatic military) nor can I "investiage" them like I'm supposed to through the log. Lots of bugs.
I've seen this happen with evey type of new alien, from neutral space critters to other empires.

I had the same problem with your very same alien, the green crystal guys.

Imho this is a bug.

Ok, looks like I'm in the same boat with everyone... testing a new game with bugs

Yep, had that happen but with different aliens. There's a link to "investigate" when you click on the aliens, but no project comes up.

I have had this problem a couple of times, but it has always been because I needed to do something else beforehand. IE scan the planet I saw the aliens on (because I saw thier spaceport and they were pre-space) or go into combat with the aliens and kill one of thier fleets. Once I did that, the project became available.

I have only had the problem like 2 or 3 times though.

Yup, same bug I have now

I've had this happen in every game I've played. Either nothing in the situation or the Investigate button does nothing. I finally resorted to just wiping out the Space Amoebas because it won't let me investigate and they started getting hostile.

It may be that some of your game files are corrupted? Have you tried verifying files integrity?

Stumbled on this problem a few times already, but this one got me thinking... everything is already scanned, there's nothing to do around here. Selecting the alien vessels show the Investigate button, but there's nothing on the objectives panel...
