I just ran a game as an observer and they reached a fairly decent size almost immediatly after arival then... stopped.
They just stoped trying and sat there.
So there is a good chance you can recover if they aren't covering the entirity of your space.
I tyipcly lose my entire fleet in the first encounter of every war. You'll bounce back.
if they just sit there then I could leave it as a final boss or something I suppose...
They speard so fast I didn't even noticed how they expanded
In the unpatched version of the game every station in a system their influence touched also started to expand their influence. thankfully that doesnt seem to be the case any more as far as I can see at the moment.
Weird, in my game everyone got a huge relationship bonus to eachother and everyone was forming alliances with eachother, I could pretty much ally anyone except for my rivals. Though I did all the work in my game, I got access from the AI that the Unbidden spawned in and sent my whole fleet.

It's a bug, Paradox knows it and Wiz is working on fix.

Thye will rebuild as fast as you crush them, but the research points you'll get ,and the techs you'll get from the battles is priceless, and you might be able to hold their influence back for a long time.
I think I'll just wait until Heinlein where (I understand) the crisis events can be turned off. Frustrating to have hours and hours of gameplay ruined by the Unbidden event which just feels broken.
