If you have ANY problems starting Stellaris - Try this!

If you have problems starting the game in any way, try the following:

• Disable any user made mods
  
• Verify the game cache (right click Stellaris in Steam -> Properties -> Local Files -> “Verify integrity of game cache”)
  
• Delete the …\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris -folder on your computer (make sure to backup any save files you may have in there)

If the game still won’t start after doing the above steps, then completely reinstall the game.


Also, it seems some people had problems playing it fullscreen. Try setting it to windowed mode if nothing else helps (if you have a problem solved by this, please post a bug report in our bug report forum here[forum.paradoxplaza.com])

EDIT no3 You can also try starting the game by going to ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Stellaris\ and starting stellaris.exe by right clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"

I'm on linux and the game is pretty much unplayable. It freezes constantly. At least you windows guys will get your problems fixed. On linux were used to getting the short end of the stick

My game was freezing up after 5 mins in game. I have avast virus protection and put it into gaming mode and it stops the freezing game runs pretty good on just a i5 12 g ram.

Parrin you have to link your steam account with your paradox account
if you dont have one make it its simple than edit your profile and there you will have the option to link to steam

but i must say in that forum nobody gona help you either.
All devs are working on the patch I guess, well this happens if you ship out a broken game

Ive tried all the "fixes" listed here and on the Paradox Stellaris forum. my concern now is that my steam play time for this game is going up for every attempt i have at running this game, it shows 28 minutes played. i hope i dont hit the 2 hours played limited before i can request a refund from steam. I just hope the devs fix the game so i can actually play it.

The "stuck at desktop" stuff happened to me, and was solved by setting to window first, run the game once, then set it to full screen again.

Microsoft SurfaceBook Users: You will need to edit the ...\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\settings.txt file to adjust the resolution as it defaults to a squirrely 1000x1500 and is unusable.

Tested resolutions:
- 1920x1080 (This puts black bars along the top and bottom of the screen)
- 2000x3000 (Works, but you have to specify it. Turn off multi-sampling for better performance. Also recommend changing in the config file the UI scaling to 2.)

3000x2000 with ui scaling to 2 makes the main menu look odd as it looks like the background animation doesn't handle the ui scaling well... but so far it seems playable. (EDIT: Just noticed the right-click menu becomes difficult at best if neigh unusable on a ui scaling of 2... It is often off the viewable screen. Bug Paradox! For the time being, use Scaling of 1 and get used to squinting at this resolution...)

Remember: With the SurfaceBook, you are essentially using a 940m with 1GB vRAM for the dGPU. Adjust expectations accordingly and when in doubt, lower the resolution. Less resolution, less memory and CPU horsepower required. Most games (including Space Engineers and Fallout4) are perfectly playable on 720p for example on this!

R9-390 here with 2 monitors, got the ADAPTER=1 error. So I Verified the Integrity, and also noticed the game failed to create a settings.txt file in documents/paradox/stellaris. Created one and added adapter = 1 to the bottom line. COMPLETELY restarted the Steam Client, and signed in, BOOM. WORKS PERFECTLY. HOPE THIS HELPS

you need to register the game to your paradox forum account. Use the game key or link your steam account to it.
