First 4X Space Strategy game you played?

As the title says, mine was: Supremacy (Overlord in the U.S.) on the Atari ST 1991

While I've been playing 4x games for over 20 years now, my first SPACE 4x game was Distant Worlds: Legends. Every other space 4x game I've tried has had to measure up to that and all have failed to measure up to date although I must admit, I enjoyed GC2 a lot for a time as well. But Stellaris should take its place as my new favourite shortly after launch.

Mine was probably Millennium 2.2 on the Atari ST, I loved that game, but interestingly I've not played a space 4x since from memory so I'm looking forward to Stellaris

Imperium Galactica II: Alliances. Got it back in the late 90s or early 2000s I think. It had so many enjoyable elements like Colonial Management, detailed Ground and Space Combat, and a complex Diplomacy/Espionage system with cunning AI. No game like it has come out since and I'm hoping, given time, Stellaris will become another classic for me someday (Maybe).
