Creating Vassals
I haven't experimented with this a whole lot yet but I was colonizing planets and wanted to create a vassal with one of them - I thought this was fairly easy to do before Le Guin and can't figure out if I'm not meeting some sort of criteria? Like do I need a certain pop size on the planet before creating the vassal?

Like I said, haven't tried creating vassals in other ways, more interested in creating a vassal from a planet I've colonized myself (using Feudal Society and want to see how they expand, trying to do so as early as possible to develop a strong ally)

Go to Planets and Sectors. There is a "Create Vassal" button. It turns the *entire sector* intol the Vassal now though, so be careful.

Fuedal Society is now a legit very good expansionist strategy. Take Domination and Diplomacy Traditions, have a heap of loyal vassals that boost your tech and naval cap up. Build your core system tall.

yea you cant turn the sector with the capital into a vassal and you cant edit the sector so you may have to end up giving up your living metal or that 1 choke point you didn't want to give away...

Ah I see, bummer. Is there a predictable algorithm as to when a new sector is formed? Thanks all for the helpful info so far.

Everything 2 hyperlane jumps away from the 1st planet is within the the sector from the core. any planets 3 or more hyperlanes will automaticly create a sector with that planet being the core or that sector.
If you are willing to use console commands then you can release the sector as a vassal, and use debug_yesmen (AI always accepts trades) to force the new vassal to give you back the systems you wanted to keep, bc that is how releasing vassals *should* work.
