The Horus Heresy novels are pretty good.

I recommend the Honor Harrington novels. They are solid military science fiction works that starts off as basically the Napoleonic Wars in space before maturing into its own thing. I like it.

Read Greg Bear's War Dogs. It's newer than that other stuff and very, very good. I haven't seen such a fresh modern take on military sci-fi in awhile. Basically, the human race encounters a smarter alien race who promises & delivers all kinds of tech, in exchange for one thing: you have to join a war against one of their enemies. The whole world as we know it is turned on its head. It's amazing and thoughful & you can't put it down. He also did a Halo trilogy that I wasn't aware of & need to go check out.

Next, going back to old stuff, would be The Forever War by Joe Haldeman and Armor by John Steakley. And if you really have some time to kill, read David Gerrold's 2000 page, unfinished epic: The War Against The Chtorr series. I read it four times already in anticipation of the completion of the novel. I guess he's not planning on finishing it & having somebody do it after his death, but it's very interesting & he's a great writer like the others above. They pages just flip right through like Stephen King novels, man.

Depends on what you are looking for. The Honor Harrington books are good for ship v. ship combat as well as building an interesting universe, while the Ciaphas Cain books are good for the nitty-grity ground combat in the 41st Millenium among the Imperial Guard. You know, the guys who go up against mutan horrors from beyond the veil of space and time with naught but flak jackets and a gun that may as well be a flashlight.

You can also never go wrong with the Horus Heresy books, or most of the Black Library's range. Just stay away from anything by C.S Goto.

I agree on this >> "...and Armor by John Steakley" I also liked a book called "Hammer's Slammers" about future tank warfare

I just read, "Into the Black- Odyssey One" by Evan Currie. It manages to strike a nice balance between the "hard"; Semi-plausible science and military action while still paying some attention to the characters and not becoming too dry as a consequence of pushing the battle reports too hard. There is a really nice sequence that echoes classic submarine warfare that was enjoyable to read. The author is a new voice but walks in Heinlein's footsteps.

Honorverse books are good. Webber also has a series of three books called Empire from Ashes for absurd high-tech space explosion fun time.

John Ringo's Troy Rising is good. But incomplete. Better than most Ringo about the unnecessary sexism.

Known Space books by Larry Nievian. Man Kzin wars by multiple authors.

If the books are as good as the series The Expanse should be worth reading.

@Apostate

I considered mentioning The Expanse series but was flip flopping on whether I'd call it military sci fi. Whatever the definition it's fantastic reading and anyone who appreciates good sci fi should give them a go. If you enjoyed the SyFy channel adaptation you should check it out. The books flow with all the cool of the show but the characters are richer and more fascinating.

Old Mans War by John Scalzi

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

Both are great and high quality reads if you like Heinlien and Starship troopers as I do

I'd love more recommendations also

David Drake has great series of novels revolving around a transplanted Ancient roman legion shanghied into merc work (just mention in passing Falkenberg's Hammers Slammers :) ) -- John Ringo has a really long (like 12 volumes) on a similar theme where Earth is brought into a galactic struggle because of our warrior characteristics.

The follow-up? novels Forever Free and Forever Peace are also very good.

Forever War by Joe Haldemann and his "nemesis" Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, the two sides of military sci-fi
