How to stop Stellaris and mods from updating?
It seems that the latest patch doesn't do much, and I'm afraid the game and mods updating themselves will break how mods currently work in my game. How do I stop them from updating to the newest version?

One option is to let the game update and then under Stellaris Properties (Right-Click in your library), under the Betas tab select the version you want to stay on.

If you're desperate to stay on a particular version, one option is to make a copy of your Stellaris game folder, let one of the versions be updated, and anytime you want to play on the old version, rename your folders so that Steam loads the game from the previous version, and then rename them back after you're finished playing. If Steam ever automatically updates the game, it'll update the game folder you don't care about, leaving your preferred version intact. I did this for a month after Fallout 4 got updated with the Survival mode update, and it broke my Mod Manager and mods.

Can you explain to me indetail how you do that. Want to start modding Stellaris and Fallout 4 but always did't because constant patching. For stellaris it's not a big deal matches don't last as long as a fallout 4 playthrough.

When it comes to modding Fallout 4, just make a copy of your Fallout 4 install directory, or rename it and let Steam download and rebuild your install. This obviously requires double the space to install, so that's a consideration. In my case, I wanted to run Fallout 4 version 1.4 (when the current version was 1.5), so I named the two folders "Fallout 4 1.4" and "Fallout 4 1.5". Whenever I wanted to play or mess around with one of the versions, I'd just remove the version number, so that I'd have a "Fallout 4" directory, and then add the version number when I was done. In FO4's case Steam never really checked that it was the latest version so I didn't have to worry about it forcing an update.

When it comes to mods for Fallout 4, my recommendation is to go to the Nexus (nexusmods.com), rather than using the mods from the Steam Workshop. Download them and install them through a mod manager. I suggest Mod Organizer because it is far more powerful, but a bit more complicated than the Nexus Mod Manager. Mod Organizer makes it very easy to have a clean version of the game if you ever need to go back to a mod-free game, or to create a new profile with a different set of mods for a different playthrough.

If you download mods from the Steam Workshop and you don't want them to be auto-updated, my suggestion is once Steam has downloaded the mod, find out where Steam downloads it, copy it to another location on your hard drive and then unsubscribe from it on the Workshop. You can then manually install the mod, and not have to worry about Steam auto-updating it.

Are you referring to Stellaris or Fallout 4?

With Stellaris, it's actually easy to go back and stay on a previous version. You don't need to have the separate install. Right Click on Stellaris, select Properties. Under the Betas tab, select the version you want to return to, and your game should remain on that version, regardless of the updates Paradox makes to the game. I forgot about this in my original response.

If you want multiple versions of Stellaris, in the event that you have a couple different games that are running on different versions, creating multiple install folders should work as I described. I just did it now, and can switch between 1.2.3 and 1.0.0 if I so desire just by renaming the stellaris folders and running it normally through Steam.

With Fallout 4, I did have to look for a downgrade patch. I came across it on a forum/discussion page, and it allowed me to downgrade from the 1.5 to 1.4 version. Google "Fallout 4 downgrade", and it should be one of the top links. Apparently they are up to version 1.7, which just shows how long it's been since I last played ;)

With Fallout 4 though you may want to have two separate installs, as it's very likely Steam will at some point try to force your downgraded version to be updated whenever Bethesda releases an update. To switch between the versions just rename the install folder, though remember which install folder is for what version of the game.

Ah so downgrade it and keep a copy. What do i need to copy everything to be safe?

Wherever you installed Fallout 4 to which would be \steamapps\common\Fallout 4

So to get this straight i have to copy the entire game folder when there is an update and then click play thats it? it won't update it?

You'll want to have two install folders, one with your preferred version, and one that you let Steam update. Depending on how often you play, you may want to have the current Fallout 4 folder be the version that steam updates just incase it does an update without you realizing it. Once you're used to it, it' doesn't take much time to rename one folder, and then rename the second.

As long as the version you want to play is the actual "Fallout 4" folder, just hit play through steam, your mod manager or your desktop shortcut. Then rename the folders when you're done.

So i won't rename them but just make the version i want stored somewhere else.ah nevrmind fallout 4 is pretty big. Then when it updates i just have to overwrite it?

When Fallout 4 updates, you'd need to wait for a downgrade patch to be available. I wouldn't be surprised though in a few months Bethesda will stop doing patches and updates for the game, since the last DLC will be coming out later this month and they'll have no further incentive to work on the game.

Alternatively play Fallout 4 on a computer that has Steam in offline mode and never have Steam go online for as long as you play the game. I could technically do that with my second computer which I use to render videos, since Steam on that computer is only there because of Movie Studio Platinum, and being offline is the only way to have two copies of the program open at the same time. I edit with one and render and upload with the other.
