Traditions can offer powerful bonuses that the tech tree can’t provide, while tech is of course the easiest way to snowball.
Considering most other empires wont complete their ascension paths until 2240-2260, you have 20 years of a completed ascension path, and with fanatic ego you also get 10% more specialist output. Yeah you wont have as good leader bonuses for obvious reasons, but this start snowballs like crazy.
Plus you have access to the Utopian living standard if you can somehow get enough consumer goods to run it.
Also the capital looses building slots to things like the embassy. And it got a fixed designation.
So the empire capital designation is best used as a tech bonus.
Void Dwellers Megacorp - Research, because you can refit only your capital habitat with research districts, and you already produce a huge amount of unity just through the 3 starting habitats (something like 70+/month before building any new jobs for unity)
Remnants Megacorp - Unity, because when you restore the Ecumenopolis at your capital, a couple of building slots are still reserved for capital-only buildings. So you don't have room for a Research Institute + Labs in addition to the support buildings of whatever else you want to focus your ecumenopolis on.
So i turn the first two expansion planets into Trade and Research, where the smaller one becomes the Trade planet.
It could take much time for me to find a first/second/third tech planet. To play save, HQ is always tech focus
