What's a good starting planet type to have as your homeworld?
This is crazy.. everytime I start a race, my surrounding neighborhood don't have any good planets of the same type, while the AI also seems to have plenty.
I scout/survey the surroundings pretty quick, but no dice.

How do I chose a race that has a good starting planet type?

Its random man. Your planet type has no effect, they are spawn pretty much the same. Its a bit strange you aren't finding nearby planets though, I always seem to find at least 3 in my immediate area.

But for sure, it has nothing to do with your species traits...

Well, I manage to find planets, but none far enough to actually expand my influence.

The planets I generally find are right next door, which are already in my influence zone.. so when I colonise them I only get a partial increase of additional territory (the forward increase of zone), as the influence zone towards my HW is wasted.

By default the game only overwrites two star systems per empire on game start. Home system & 1st Tier Colony (with 1 ideal planet). (Excluding use of Deneb & Sol system starts which doe a few other things). Beyond that and the handful of "special" systems the galaxy is otherwise generated completely randomly with no relation to what empires exist on the map.

Unfortunatly this means that its possible to be Tropical preference (what I generally use) and get stuck in a section of galaxy that seems to otherwise be frozen. In those situations I end up conquering another race just so I can have colonists lol

Apparently the 1.3 patch is going to change the planet typeing though both to lower then umber of habitable planets and also make things a little more balanced.

EDIT: If your good with a text editor you can make a mod with a custom starting system to generate nearby realestate for you. Thats essentually what I did when it started bugging me lol :P

Tropical and oceanic have a very small advantage over the rest, since they are easier to terraform. You can terraform tropical to oceanic directly, skiping continental, and vice-verca. This will, however, probably be changed with heinlein, due to the changes to planet types.

If you start on Earth I think you tend to have several continental worlds around you.

Just my luck that I changed my HW typ to tropical in my 2nd game with Sol/Earth, lol.

I usually go for a thorium planet. My species generally do well on it compared to molten and arid planets.

Maybe Tropical Worlds are a little bit better as Homeworlds:

The "Bleak" modifier (-5% hability, -10% food) never appears on tropical worlds.
The "Lush" modifier (+10% hability, +20% food) may only appear on Continental, Tropical, Ocean or Gaia Worlds

(as written in the stellariswiki ( http://www.stellariswiki.com/Celestial_body#Celestial_body_modifiers )

Other planet modifiers, that are depending on the planet class seems not to exist.

These modifiers would not be present at your homeworld, but at your future colonies. So having a better chance to get not/get those modifiers on your planets would give you a small advantage over dry or cold planet-species

Correct me if I overlooked something.
