Is Enigmatic Engineering worth getting?
For singleplayer games specifically.

If you really don't want the AI to have your special tech, then yes.
Or if you're lacking in encryption and the AI keeps doing spying operations on you.

But other than that, it's more for multiplayer as I never really seen the AI use any of the special techs. Well maybe the crystaline forged plating but oh well.

Honestly, it's one of the options that is pretty much irrelevant, singleplayer or multiplayer.

Singleplayer no, but don't poo poo its use in multiplayer.

only if it's unlikely that any ai you plan on fighting can't be defeated in a single war. In multiplayer it's only useful if you have some unique tech like Dragon Scales and stuff like.
that.
for the most part it's not worth a essention slot imo.

My experience with it on single player has been strategically useful as a pick, but inevitably feels like it wasn't useful since it doesn't straight up give you more gains in something.
You might not need to pick it to protect your technology if your encryption is very good anyways.

Wasting potential that could be used to push ahead to instead hinder the AI is pretty much universally a waste of time. Your goal is to grow strong for the endgame crisis, and you really shouldn't care what some puny AI empires do with your technology.

Only if you feel like not sharing your crystal plating with your enemies (and possibly the rest of the galaxy) but its all personal preference and is more reactive rather than proactive.

The best alternative to enigmatic engineering is just have your fleet consist of the largest vessels geared for long range combat.

Unless you are fighting a much larger fleet/you jump into a system that has a fleet that is right on top of you then most fleets will be destroyed before they can fire back in any meaningful way, let alone destroy one of your vessels.

Enigmatic engineering is nice and I like the concept, but it just doesn't seem worth the ascension point when there are simple alternatives.

From the 3.5.3 patch notes just released:
AI will now research debris.

It helps, but really you want to smash the ai when you go to war with them, so who cares if they get a little stronger from debris, just get a perk that gives a direct buff

And battle ship fleets take few losses against ai fleets to be honest if you want to play super optimally
