Possible reasons of fleet selection lag.
First:
It appears that significant performance drop when selecting fleets is, in part, caused by them being not full and game trying to trace reinforcement shipyards.

Having a dozen of such fleets also makes fleet manager borderline unusable.

For example, selecting a 6/7 battleship fleet deep in hostile territory, or simply owning one and opening fleet manager window causes visible stagger when scrolling - and it completely disappears when I make fleet 6/6, or move it to a system with shipyard.

0 power dead fleets also increase fleet manager lag.

As for solution, well, just don't lose ships. /jk

But seriously, having "Shrink all fleets/selected fleet to present ships" and "Delete empty fleets" buttons in fleet manager would be at least a band-aid. Currently it's painfully laggy and borderline unusable after early game under circumstances that are nearly unavoidable.

Second:
Another reason that I read about, witnessed myself and have no explanation for, is having all ships upgraded. Opening ship designer and swapping one component (so "Fleet can be upgraded" arrow appears) resulted in lag disappearing. With this issue, fleet manager only heavily lags when fleet is selected, not just always.

Selecting 200 corvette fleet (trying to create one with fleet manager was not an option, trying to get to 0/200 fleet in it resulted in effectively a freeze) causes absolutely massive lag. One component swapped on blueprint, and using said fleet becomes smooth as silk until fleet is "upgraded" to changed blueprint.

Back to unupgraded fleet, one ship added in fleet manager, 200/201, lag, 200/210, massive lag, 200/220, both selecting fleet and using fleet manager becomes nearly impossible.

But make it 200/200 and have one ship unupgraded, and it back to playable. Player-side band-aid is to keep fleet "unupgraded", but this is clearly a product of developer oversight.

For conclusion, keep your fleets full, keep one ship unupgraded, and your sanity will be a tiny bit safer.

TLDR: this game is in DIRE need of optimizing. I have never actually used the fleet manager tbh. I always just deal with my fleets individually, and i have noticed if i just select a fleet and have it selected the FPS goes from 120 to 0.145980 instantly. The moment i unselect the fleet, the FPS instantly corrects itself back to max. It happens regardless of fleet size or consistency. I wish i knew how to fix it. Game becomes unplayable.

I think it depends on CPU, as everything with Stellaris.

Too many pops and you'll be playing in slow motion.

If there are too many fleets on the screen trying to move (like when you vassalize the entire galaxy and tells their fleets to follow you around) then you'll also lag to hell.

When you select too many fleets, it all goes to hell.

Even opening your fleet manager when you have too many fleets can lag your game to hell.

Every time I get into the late game I overclock my CPU to the max and it can buy me a few extra decades without lag, but eventually it's just not enough.

the fleet selection lag is new (started since overlord), i actually came here to mention this before.

i thought it was cause of mods ive been running but no.

the issue is something to do with your CPU though, but selecting fleets should NOT take up so much CPU

so it had to be something that was changed in overlord but i dont know what

correction, its tied to your game stage as well

for example, i have 4 fleets with 100k-300k fleet strength which for me at that time was 1100 Fleet Power

i was starting to get a bit of lag when i started a chain of wars til eventually after the 5th one was done, i was down to 3 fleets with 100k Fleet strength each and 500 Fleet power total and my lag had only increased.

i mentioned this in another post but if pops are such a detriment to the game, then they need to be removed...

i suggested an idea to replace it but also keep some version of it in the game

you guys know that all this can and will be solved if you install stellaris on ssd?

even a simple 540mb/s can do the trick, like it did for me
