The way I see the hypers, is they are a mid-way point until you *find* or acquire a gateway to research the tech for the most part, and depending on map RNG can be a good bit until you do in my experience.
Hyperlanes are midgame structures.
You can queue building a track with them.
They do get a lot faster when you get jump drives or psi jump drives.
Gateways are more expensive and you need to micro them.
If you got bad luck this will be the final non-repeatable tech you research.
