Federation types ranking for 3.3?
What would be the current ranking of the best Federation types?

Any specific types better for specific playstyles or is it just a universal decision?

All federations are good, as agreed upon :)

Trade league is the obvious and the best choice when you play a trade build. Martial alliance is very good in multiplayer. Galactic union is kind of the option for when you dont fulfill the requirements for any other typ of federation. Hegemony is kind of a meme but can be very good too.

All of them are good in their own way but Trade League is still probably the best even though the unity gain from trade isn't as good anymore as well as unity being easier to generate than it was before.

But if I had to guess the worse is the default Galactic Union? the reduced cohesion loss saves like a hundred XP if you let the cohesion get that low in the first place and didn't bother to use more than one envoy to get it in the positive again.

Is Research type any good?

due to some fancy match all federations are trash compared to holding every world directly

also taking part in federation have some cost, you must dedicate envoy and pay influence and most important part is paying world that can be used to produce much much more resources than your federation can provide bonuses.

Other than AI wars, is there any actual downside for being in any federation(Assuming cohesion is not completely ded)?

Yeah, at least on the current patch they tend to work against you (even when in a 'friendly' Federation). They'll be fixing that in the next patch that comes out in less than 2 weeks, at least to some extent.

probably AI won't be completely useless by 12th, but right now, only somewhat remotely useful federation is hegemony as you can set laws that removes voting and makes every member de facto your vassal.

What do you mean against you?
The bad war votes that wreck cohesion?

AI will constantly vote for and against free migration, if you vote them down, they will accumulate -1000 penalty that last forever.

yes they will hate you as much as some genocidal empire for voting down free migration.

after that, they will constantly cause troubles and in case of non hegemony federation will leave and break federation.
and penalty will be here after that.

Oh that sounds like an odd bug both in the modifiers and voting frequency.

I haven't played in a few months, the Expansion announcement got me re-interested and this is my first game in 3.3 so I wanted to check out if Federations are worth it, guess i'll stay away from them till a patch.

devs promised to fix (kind of) this "feature" in overlord, it worth waiting for 12th if you are attached to your games and have problems starting anew.

Can't I roll back to a previous version to continue a run?
RawCode 30 ABR 2022 a las 8:18
do you really going to continue some random game when new content is here?

Well if I "Value" the current run, I can finish it before moving on to the new stuff, sure!
