Containment Wars
I'm trying to contain a Fanatic Purifier, but I don't understand what my end-goal is. Obviously, I need to "contain" them, but can I wait till the attrition brings their War Exhaustion to 100%, or do I need to capture all of their planets to win?

Go until attrition hits, I usually if I don't want to bother, take all their starbases. Then they can't make any more ships and then if I'm too busy to bother with them (fighting another war) I allow war exhaustion to tick until it is over. Good thing is that every system you take is yours immediately.

Good Luck!

Have a great day!

It would be a total war CB. So you get control of any systems that you have total control of automatically. For systems with colonies you have to take the colonies to get control of the system.

You can either go for a total wipe out, or take as much as you want in the war then status quo into peace keeping your gains.
Note that you can only win this war by taking all their stuff, e.g. invading all their planets. They will never surrender, since surrender = empire destruction.

Your only option is to either settle for status quo or to take as much territory of theirs as you want but of course you can easily lose it if you over extend your forces so it might not be worth it.

Your end goal is whatever you want. It's a total war so you can get all their territory for free if you want to.

Containment is a total war casus belli (claims and such isn't necessary in a total war and you get stuff you take instantly rather then after the war). It's basically you declaring war to end a threat to the galaxy as a whole.

So the end goal of a containment war is to destroy the threat, how you choose to do this (wipe them out completely or leave them with just a system or two) is up to you.

The interesting thing about genocidal empires is that they do total war, but if another empire wars them also gets a total war on them.

Due to the fact everyone hates them can exploit multiple fronts if their wide to their demise. Try to stay on par fleet wise at the very least. Last game I had a genocidal empire next to me get real wide like 25% of the galaxy almost. I worked with an empire on the other side and slaughtered all their ships. They were warring the other guy so I warred them.

So moral distract them on another empire their main fleets then pull their smaller fleets through the floor boards until only their large ones are left. Since they are taking territory you will want to take some to offset. If their empire is genociding other species and you take their planet with their pops that should help you tip the population/economy strength away. Do maximum collateral with minimum loss so you can declare status quo peace by the time or if their stronger fleets come back. This should buy you 10 years to build your fleet further push tech farther to theirs.
