How does xeno-compatibility work?
I've tried looking for stuff that explained how it works and how to cross-breed species but so far no luck, are there any specific conditions that need to be met for that sort of stuff to happen, or is it just a mystery?

I assume you have the ascension perk?

Beyond that, you just need 2 more more species living on a planet and that planet can produce hybrid pops.

Yep, got the ascension perk and I have three different species on a planet, been around twenty years and no hybrids yet. Is it mostly just luck?

Two species on same planet is far more likely to produce hybrid than three or more or some reason.
Also, both species being the same species class increase hybrid chance.

On side note, if there is a "modified" specie for any reason you could end up creating a new specie rather than a sub one. Which is why I tend NOT to gene mod or modify anything until sub-specie hybrid is produced. (This include Clone army descendant, OUCH! )

*From 3,000 hours of fooling around with xeno-compatibility or just out-right mod it!*

As an addendum, xeno compatibility used to be one of the major factors killing performance before (haven't tried since the last major patch).
Just opening the population window was a major pain.

Even without it enabled opening the species list is a pain.

Not ever did I manage to breed a necrophage hybrid, despite these empires being the genetic cesspool of the galaxy. Unfortunately, my divine claret refused to pour from one cup to another. Try as I might, with a lovely procession of young and ever dutiful species, my noble seed simply would not sprout.

The AI loves to make 15-20 different subspecies of every flipping Lithoid in the galaxy!
And that's before Xeno-compatibility enabled!
