But honestly wait on a answer from an better experienced player than me :D
One problem with colonizing with Droids is that they can't hold Ruler Stratum Jobs. There's some mechanic that enables them to hold some or all Specialist Stratum Jobs, which I think is based on your AI Rights Policy choice, and specifically this might prevent them from holding Researcher Jobs.
However, Ruler Stratum Jobs provide a lot of valuable resources, especially Amenities, so having your Ruler Stratum Job slots empty on low-Habitability planets will be a problem. I imagine that what will happen is that your main species will still begin to grow on that planet, just very, very slowly, and so take up those Ruler Jobs, but I don't actually know. The last time I was in a situation exactly like that was many, many versions ago.
You do need those Ruler Jobs filled one way or another, and one method is by making Migratin Treaties with friendly AI polities. Another is to get the Synths Tech, which comes after the Droids Tech. Synths can hold all planet-based Jobs, including Ruler Stratum Jobs, athough you need an additional Tech before they can hold Leader Jobs (i.e. Governors, Scientists, etc). A third option is to genemod your main species, or some specimens of your main species, so that they can thrive in that alien biome, Alpine or Continental or whatever it is. A fourth method is to Terraform the planet to the preferred biome of your species, or if you take the right Ascension Perk then you can Gaiaform it instead.
Since you own this planet the game tries to grow a pop at the start of each month, and because robots do not grow, the game takes a species from another planet to fill the growing pop spot. You can prevent species from popping up on that planet if you want, by enabling migration controls - you will lose all other forms of migration as well with that though.
Just make sure you first build a robot assembly plant and prioritise that job, to increase the robot population on that planet.
Once you get Synthetics, robots can also take ruler jobs (if you set AI rights to citizenship), and will be affected by happiness (regardless of AI rights).
