With either way though you should always be trying to increase your fleet cap and building ships.
A few rules that I have personally though are with techs. I ALWAYS choose hydroponic farms 2 the first chance I get. I also ALWAYS take a spaceport upgrade over anything else. I also try to get deffensive station and fortress as fast as possible too so that I can hopefully get voidborn as my 3rd ascention perk.
Another thing is colonize EVERYTHING. you may choose to not colonize some planets early if they are small and dont realy have many resources and choose to go to other better planets. By mid game though when everyones borders are touching you should be colonizing those crappy planets as well. This will increase your fleet cap and get you closer to victory conditions to win the game.
As I said before ALWATS be building fleet. Even if you are a peaceful empire and you think everyone around you likes you, unless they are in your federation if you start falling behind other empires in fleet you WILL BE ATTACKED. There are also awakened empires and the end game crisis to worry about late game. All of them always require a lot more fleet than I always expect. So even if it says that everyone is inferior or pathetic to you besides AE's you should still be building fleet.
I could go on for hours about tips and stuff but I hope this helps some. Also, my tips are my playstyle and there is no "right" way to play. Others may do things totaly different which may even be better but this is the way I like to.
#1 mineral stations are important, get around 30-ish minerals per month by the first few years and pick up energy stations as needed to make sure you're not in the red. Avoid research stations at first as they barely make a dent on your researching speed at first when you could have benefited much more from energy / mineral stations instead. The exception to this being those +4 research ones, then maybe consider them if you have the minerals for it.
#2 get some additional corvettes at first to help deal with the "rogue people" going to piracy on you. usually they have 4 ships and having 6-7 corvettes with an adminal leader on it is just enough to deal with them and their small outpost ramshackle somewhere nearby . You DON'T want them destroying your space resource stations forcing you to spend resources rebuilding them.
#3 planets smaller than 10 can't build a planetary capital which basically limits what you can upgrade to for your buildings later on, so try not to colonize them unless you aboslutely need it for something.
#4 research the solar panels tech in physics. It's a space port upgrade that gives +3 energy /month which negates the 3 energy cost of maintaining it. This is very useful early on since every resource counts.
I would ignore his tip 3 at mid to late game. That small planet can still give you much needed fleet cap by its spaceport. By this point you should have habitats which should cover your energy and science, and if realy needed minerals. Mid to late game you want EVERYTHING colonized. As I said in my original post, thats how you hit victory, it doesnt matter if is a 6 tomb world of a 25 gaia they both count the same. You need colonized worlds.
