I just got a first contact in my home system for aliens code-named Cracked Crystalline Shards. There isn't anything in my home system, and it won't let me assign an envoy. halp

Cracked Crystalline Shards are roaming animals, you don't have to do diplomacy with them after you've finished identifying them. If they're hostile you'll just have to kill them.

Cracked shards go to a location and become the hostile crystalline shardling groups you can encounter, they are how the crystals spread.

Only way to pacify crystals is through a research mission in the situation log after you identify them

Note you only get the option to pacify them if you have pacifist or xenophile ethics.
