Hegemon origin sucks
They needed to improve the initial placement for this to work. You can literally start wedged in a damn corner and have the other 2 "members" steal all the systems.

I imagined this would be a problem, people said this might be a problem. I'm not shocked to see the devs didn't do anything about it.

Yup I can invade them, that's not the point.

Here's an idea. Get ahead of them. It's perfectly possible not to get "wedged" in.

Did I say it always happens? Perhaps drop the "perfectly possible" bs.

You can start in the corner only leading to dead ends while the AI members placement is to the outside with the only paths not leading to dead ends. This means they get there first, scan first and claim the system first.

"Get ahead of them" So helpful /sarcasm.

I mean... that is literally the solution. Working 100% as designed. Either add more system connection on mapgen and avoid using spirals.

Did I say in my OP I needed a solution? Seems like you are replying to stuff that wasn't said.

Bad design =/= Solve my problem

Initial placement is fine imo. It's good you get wedged sometimes, adds variety and it's trivial to adapt. If anything I'd be upset if they removed this possibility.

There's no winning with this one...

it doesn't matter you have open borders that can't be revoked. It's actually the strongest cheezy start in the game.

yeah, its pretty bad, devs should have put them at least 2 systems away to give everyone some space to breath.
and those guys delayed DLC for half a year to polish things, imagine how broken this dlc was in its first iteration >_>

working as intended

I'm finding I need to create and re-create new games until I get a start where everyone can expand. It's pretty frustrating.

It's basically the trade-off for Hegemon. They take your two guaranteed habitable worlds (which spawn a couple of systems away) and compete with you for expanding.

It gives you an early edge (you typically will have 3-1 fleet power compared to people you run into at least until the expansion starts to bite you) that tempers into something relatively balanced.

I spawned right near a Hegemon in my game, and it actually had me serious worried for the first time in ages because I was going up against a federation at a time when I could barely have 30 corvettes and since I have cutting off their expansion.

It meant an early war (since I needed to cut them down from 3-1 to at least 2-1) and one I would have lost except for the fact I pushed it so early they didn't have any claims so I managed to take a couple of systems, lose basically all of my fleet to take out about half of theirs (as I was heavily outnumbered) and sued for Status Quo.

Still only got half the systems I wanted, so was still facing 3-1 odds only a few years later (ended up having to rush for Federation myself and signing up with literally whatever other empires would have me in order to not get squashed in the second war, 3-3 odds was definitely not in their favour with me cutting of their expansion).

I tried this and the Common ground start on a medium galaxy 400 systems and 12 players in 3.6 patch and they spawn NEXT to my system!

Then you obviously start by jumping 2 systems away instead of 1 and start scanning that and move your construction ship there to claim that first. Sure it will cost more then claiming neighboring systems, but since you won't be able to take any closer systems that is a moot point.

After taking that system you just start expanding from there.

Its not hard to get ahead of the AI's expansion.

One of the strongest origins sucks because of an easily fixable consequence that I can't be bothered to make up for? Is that right?

Either show them who's the boss or change your galaxy settings.
