Shroud covenents
Which one is the best which one is the worse. I general go with instrument of desire but want to change it a bit.

Desire is the only somewhat acceptable covenant. But it is already very very bad if you are non-spritualist psionic, because then the crazies take over due to negative governing ethics.

Read the others, none of their debuffs are tolerable.

Does composer of strands have a chance to give you the bio ascension traits and would it affect pops not in your empire but of the same species?
Whispers in the Void is tolerable. The leader hits are no problem at all. The -30 stability to a random planet won't break you unless you somehow get the covenant super early or are a one planet challenge. Its only a 1 in 10 chance per drawback roll to hit you with the downside that hard screws a planet. Even that won't break you once you have expanded to enough planets.

IIRC it works so that only psionic species in your empire gain a random trait.

Example your only psionic "master species" getting the Repugnant trait, and you don't have gene points to remove it.
So I could still get a copy of the previous version of the species from a different empire allowing me to apply the old template?
end of cycle...

This. You just have to treat your leaders as expendable

One of the very few advantages to playing Psionic is good leaders. Not to say the extra reasearch speed isn't appreciated, but you know what's also good for research speed? long-lived high-level leaders and stable planets.

I'd say, pick up your nads and go for the End of the Cycle. Either conquer the galaxy within 50 years, or win the game by being the last one standing by the end date after The Reckoning mopped them up. It's not ideal, but it is very funny.

Yes but go full Transcendence and every leader is good, its just their levels. Whispers is also good if you already have a lot of leader lifespan, for example if your species is Venerable. But I've found that an "expendable Psionic Leaders" build can work pretty well if comboed with Whispers.
End of cycle is the best
