Why can't military ships explore?
I understand that probing systems should be restricted to Science ships, but come on, why do military ships can't explore whatsoever? im growing tired of always having to have a godamn science ship along side my military ships just cause the Military can't explore

Unless i'm mistaken military ships do kinda explore once you have researched sensors (the system next door gets auto explored by your ship sensors). The exception being stuff like nebulas that block sensors.

True, you need science ships to go first into unknown systems (for the first time), but with good enough sensors even military ships can see into the next system.

The captains of military ships have a better union than the captains of science ships.

Scientist - Let's go boldly where no one has gone before!
Captain - Are you stupid? I am not risking my ship and crew jumping into unknown territory

Tiberius Jr. pipes in -- "We are IN the business of Risk!"
Captain -- "You are hereby promoted sir! Take the keys, I'm going on leave."

Presumably when a science ship goes it, it maps the planets and other celestial bodies in a gravity well, making a rough map, and then surveys each body for more precise info. Military ship probably does not have the cartographic tech to map out bodies and such.

You need detection range or a science vessel.

Outposts got detection range.
Warships equipped with sensors got detection range.
Nebula always got range 0
Science vessels always can explore.

Captain sits back drinking whiskey as he listens to the comms of Tiberius screaming for help as his fleet is ripped apart.

Scientist - You enjoy that too much
Captain - You take the keys, you take the risk

i can only imagine the amount of rage of new players, who constantly loose half their fleets to aggressive neutral lifeforms or guardians in the early game^^

That thing only got one skull!
While my corvettes have a skull painted on each of them!

It was changed because players were able to uncover the map extremely quickly by just splitting up their initial 3 corvettes and sending them all over the place. Now if you want to explore quickly, it's an actual investment.

Then why not lock military vessel exploration behind level 3 sensors?!

At any rate, my only complaint is that my science ships get usually oneshotted by leviathans and random amoeba's.
Especially in nebula systems.

I just wish that even with tier one sensors and a nebula system, you should always be able to tell if there is an unknown hostile in the neighbouring system.

I mean... it's locked behnd tier 1 sensors. I don't see the problem?

Aside from Nebula of course, that hyper-annoying system can go to hell.

But there's no way to explore quickly since the number of science ships is limited to the number of scientists. At the moment I have six science ships and I've gone through nine scientists.

Military ships should be able to explore the warp lines and tell what kind of star is present, with maybe a chance of seeing a gas giant; anything else should need a science ship. Thy should also be range-limited, say to three jumps beyond the empire's borders at first.

This thread is really old, and since it was first posted I'm pretty sure they added the ability for military ships to explore, and I think took it back out. I think it was 3.8, possibly 3.9 that introduced that feature to much fanfare. I'm not sure why or when they removed it again.

Ah here's where I read that. The 3.8.3 patch notes: https://steamcommunity.com/games/281990/announcements/detail/3710448695839911160
Regarding early game exploration - while we are happy with the exploration phase of the game being longer than before, it’s a bit slower than we’d like. We’re going to let military fleets with an assigned Admiral explore hyperlanes, which also has the benefit of resolving an edge case when you’re at war and have an enemy system hidden away in a nebula. They won’t be able to survey planets or explore wormholes like a crewed Science ship, but this should provide more freedom to find hyperlane choke points during your initial steps to the stars.
