Origin:
Resource Consolidation > Prosperous Unification
*RC is a pretty weak origin compared to PU. You get extra pops in PU along with a couple free districts and 15% extra output on your home world. The bonus 50 minerals from RC is nice, but having 4 additional pops speeding up an extra building slot and working early alloys is nicer. Just buy extra minerals from the market if you need to.
Civics
Zero Waste Protocol > Maintenance Protocols
*You will always have a crap-ton of drones on amenities. MP allows them to generate unity from maintenance drones, speeding up your traditions and clearing up building slots for more tech/alloy production.
optional:
Zero Waste Protocol > Driven Assimilator
*If your mates allow DA, it's a good pick for a militaristic machine empire. captured pops are much more productive in this case
Traits
remove Luxurious; get Repurposed Hardware and Double Jointed
*in the early game, you need as much alloys as you can get to expand and build your military. RH and DJ are better traits to pick. Your leaders live forever, while you will need to build Nexus districts for maintenance drones anyway.
Gameplay
*If you have the space, colonize as many planets as you can so you can start generating more pops. If you are penned in, use your superior early-game alloy production to invade your weakest neighbor. Driven Assimilators get a huge pop boost, which makes this kind of early invasion a no-brainer.
If you are playing a vanilla machine empire and capture organics, you have two options: melt all the pops down for quick energy via Chemical Processing purge or save them up to be long-term energy batteries via Grid Amalgamation slavery.
If you choose the latter option, resettle them into their homeworld and force all your drones into maintenance jobs. Once stability dips below 30, enable the "Activate Compliance Protocols" planetary decision and start spamming fortresses. This will offset ACP's -33% job output penalty with +30% job output from 100 stability. If your invaded target picked Prosperous Unification origin, then the homeworld's +15% job output will help your enslaved organics generate even more energy.
Also Pop growth speed is king, and empire sprawl doesn't mean a thing when it comes to traits so yeah.
