Ecumenopolis
What qualities make a planet a good candidate for being a Ecumenopolis? So far I've always converted the homeworld when I don't have a Relic World in my possession but is that really the best option every time or any time? And I even went so far as to convert dismantled empire's homeworld into a second Ecumenopolis. Still not sure if that was a good idea.

Those same worlds usually have massive reearch bonuses too. So save those.

A restored relic world has a modifier that gives +10% research, which when combined with the +20% for it being an encumenopolis results in the same overall boost to research. If you want research, you’re better off upgrade to the encumenopolis.
it also has the +8 Researcher Jobs as a relic world. You lose them if you change it to an Ecumenopolis, not a big deal, but it is something.

You can get those back by building an entertainment district and saving a building slot on holotheaters

Ecumenopolis also has +50% pop growth bonus. And near infinite space with the housing districts giving effectively 14 housing (24 minus 10 clerks). And spare district slots can be foundry / factory / leisure.

The 8 researchers equal one upgraded lab building, however this slot would have to go into holo theatres (several actually) on a relic world. While the ecumenopolis also gets amenities from leisure districts.

i always make my homeworld an ecumenopolis, it almost always has the most pops in my empire so more people to work on the forges

Oh, I know. I was just stating 1 other thing the Relic world has that wasn't mentioned before. You should always change a relic into a ecumenopolis when ever you can support it. The +50% Pop Growth speed alone is propably reason enough already, depending how far along in the game you are.
